PK’s Rock Rants Ep. #22 – Super Bowl Half time show 2012/Madonna

Hey folks, well I was going to do this as a review/rant, but I think this will turn into more of a rant, so if you are ready for it here we go!

Madonna, what can you say about her?  She is a pop star icon! There is no denying that whatsoever.  Now I didn’t follow who was going to be on the halftime show but I was intrigued I wanted to see what she has still.. HELL I will admit it I am a fan of her! WHO ISNT?! I mean I loved her nude book she put out… and her music, yeah.. her music that is what I meant, well her older stuff, her newer stuff.. yes.. I think I might have to review that just so that I can puke hard core style!  However her older stuff she has some great originals and yes they can be put into some great remakes, and they still sound fantastic.

Madonna has lead a great life and is a great artist, but she is just like Prince, she is a freak when it comes to people taking pictures and what not, she doesn’t like it and she is really stuck up on herself, with justifiable rights! This halftime show for the Super Bowl however, was less than stellar. I’m sorry! There was some great aspects but there were some that is going to make me go off!

First of lets go with the good: The Stage!  Ok this was such eye candy for me! I’m a total geek when it comes to amazing stage effects! This was no exception, I mean from the basic lights on the “bleachers” on the stage to the video floor! YES a Video floor, and they have used this in the past but it always makes it so worth seeing.  During the “Vogue” song you had it like it was playing a piano with the vogue pictures… very classy.  I did see one glitch where they put the field lines in the video they did start to “vibrate” a bit… granted it is tough to get it fully correct, it still worked for the most part.

Secondly, is it just me or does Madonna still look hot for her age?? I’m sorry but she still has her young adult looks and when she smiled while singing, she still has that wow factor of “OMG she can talk her way out of setting of a nuclear blast that she set off” There was one part there she looked like she was having a great time on the stage, it is a smile that makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside, and she still has that going on for her.

The second thing that was good, was the mash up of other artists that are presently in the top 10, showing up on stage… now.. this isn’t a fully good thing it is also a bad thing, and I’ll explain that.

At one point Madonna slipped on stage, but she kept her composure, and kept going.. kudos for that!

THE BAD!

So as I was saying before, the bad is having a mash-up of other people show up on Madonna’s stage. Why, well you have people do some pretty stupid stuff, if you don’t know.. I mean right now Madonna is getting flack for one of the singers flipping the bird on LIVE TV! THAT IS NOT HER FAULT! I’m sorry but that stupid bitch of a singer from the UK (MIA), was trying to make a name for herself.. yes.. the censors missed it and they blurred it a second to late because of the fact that they didn’t know she was going to do that! VERY unprofessional I would have hauled her ass out on the fucking street and gave her what for if I invited her to be on one of the greatest stages in the US to help support Madonna, and told her to pack her bags and get over it.  I mean what the fuck was she thinking?  YOU get invited by Madonna to come onto her stage to sing with her, and you finger the camera and crowd because you are “All That” I hope your career takes a nose dive and never recovers because you just pretty much shit on a music icon and the  people that you got invited to be in the “big show”.  Yes Madonna would have done that in the past as well but she learned from her mistakes because there were a few that she did back in the day and she knows what it is like and with all the PC bullshit out there.. doing that is like Career suicide! Ok…. So reading a bit more..there was a swear word in the song that she stopped herself from saying.. but, fingering the crowd… naa doesn’t help!

Secondly, I love you Madonna, but you should NOT be doing any fancy moves out there with your backup dancers, you are getting up there in your age, and infact I did see the best tweet from someone when it came to her moves out on the stage “Did Madonna steal her moves from Betty White?”  I thought it was appropriate for sure… I mean when she was twisted around in a cartwheel by one of the dancers, it was sllllooowwww, and painstaking to watch! It is almost like watching Steven Tyler swing from a trapeze on stage during one of his tours… it looked clumsy at best.  I know she is trying to appeal to everyone, but just keep your feet on the ground and do  your dance routines like that and you will be still well loved!

Third, back to the support she got.  Ok.. coming out like some Egyptian goddess is something… that really doesn’t go with her songs… and really is showing how stuck up on herself, then the whole “I’m sexy and I know it” portion of the mash-up she did… YEAH we get it! But bringing out LMAFO with you… not really working so well for me!  At one point she put her leg up and one of the guys grabbed it and she flung her other leg in the air.. so very .. awkward for sure, and a little out of place to.  Really should have been Madonna and only her, having the others on stage isn’t bad and been done before at the half-time shows, but this just shouldn’t have been done… I can understand Cee Lo coming out.. that was classy in a way, but LMAFO, and MIA and that other chick that sounds like a man when she sings at times… no… really no… (after doing some research the new Madonna song has MIA and the other chick in it)

Lastly, THAT FUCKING NEW SONG OF HERS! *Twitch* Where do I start?!!?  How about.. bad, ugly, nasty song! THAT is not a Madonna song, that is a Madonna trying to make a comeback and trying to be part of the crew that she is no longer part of, that is Madonna trying to be young again, with a fucking cheerleader song?!?! I’m sorry but you are not young! You are far from it, and yes the 80’s left a few decades ago and you are trying to keep up with the youngins, but god please don’t make songs like that! It was horrid, it will make a great dance remix, but that is about it! Sigh, I don’t have much more to say about that… just crap.. that is all!

Over all I just didn’t really like what happened, it was clumsy at best and the mash ups.. weren’t perfect… but, it was Madonna trying to do things over the top.. which is what she is good at and it works for her, but it didn’t work in this case, and I swear there was lip syncing going on too!

Here is the Video:

For now I’m PK saying ROCK ON, and we will see you on the next show!

*PK sticks his middle fingers in the air*  Lets see if that gives me any new viewers!

Hi Dan. BRAVO! I liked your spot-on analysis of a halftime show that should've been a lot better.

I don't know why the producers get it into their heads that you've gotta throw a bunch of extra artists on the stage(who NEVER otherwise perform with the headliner) in order to appeal to a larger audience...WHY? I can only think of 2 Superbowl Halftime shows where that worked....and only because the different acts were all headliners: The 1998 show with the Motown Review with Boys 2 Men Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Martha Reeves and Queen Latifah.....and the 1999 show with Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, and KISS.

The best Superbowl halftime shows have been solo concerts with the very best one being the 2002 show with U-2, followed by the 2010 show with The Who and the 2006 show with The Rolling Stones running third.

As for MIA flipping off the camera....yeah, I hope that does to her career what Sinead 'O Connor ripping up a picture of The Pope on SNL did for her career-only faster.

I look forward to your next show review. Peace.
