Ok, so as you have seen from the title, there is a film called The Martyrs and it comes from France and it was one of the worst, mean spirited, over blown, pretentious, and torturous films I have had the displeasure to see in a looooong time and that is coming from someone who sat through a Serbian Film and Silenced! In short, if you are curious, don’t bother or you are in for a long and painful sit.
So you might be asking yourselves “Misstimelordlover, how can there
be anything worse than A Serbian Film?(ASF)” Well, it may not top ASF’s
affinity for gore at some degrees, but it is worse than ASF in other
Now to be fair, ASF is infamous for it’s explicit and graphic
violence and lest we forget the “NEW BORN PORN” scene. BUT (and this is a
very controversial opinion, and I’m not sure if I agree with it myself)
ASF was a supposed commentary on the culture of Serbia and the impact
of years of being a military state has had on the mindset of past
generations and the generations to come. (As far as I could tell)
Now, it is highly debatable that any of that justifies the shit that
happens in that film but I can see how that kind of subtext can be seen
and the message it is TRYING to convey makes sense and if applied to a
less fucked up scenario is actually very thought provoking. But yeah
once you see a baby getting raped there is no way that your movie can
ever be seen in any positive light despite the context of your content
So, what does Martyrs have that even compares to the infamy of ASF? Rather, why do I despise this possibly more than ASF?
It was hard to really put my finger on it at first but I think I found a few things that I feel make it even more awful.
So let’s start with the plot (which is all over the place by the
way). It begins with a young girl named Lucie escaping from a dungeon
and winds up in an orphanage for abused children. There she meets and
befriends another little girl named Anna. Though Lucie has escaped her
prison and captors, she is still haunted by her demons both figuratively
and seemingly literally as well. Years pass and Lucie tracks down her
supposed captors and brutally slay them and their children. THEN her
friend Anna who has traveled with her through all this comes in and
helps clean up the mess Lucie has made. Eventually Lucie dies from her
psychotic delusions and Anna is left all alone to clean up. That is
until a group of people dressed in black and carrying shotguns storm the
house and capture Anna to suffer the same horrors that Lucie did in the
dungeon so many years prior. Now here is where we finally get an
explanation for all this bullshit and inane, cruel blood shed; An old
woman comes to Anna to exposit why they are doing all of this. By “this”
being the capturing of women and torturing them until they die. So get
this, the reason is that women who are tortured to the brink of death
have visions of the world of the dead or reach a state where they can
see what is beyond our spectrum of reality and these women are called
“martyrs”. These people kidnap women and brutally torture them until
they reach this state just so they can get a glimpse of the after life.
Then the rest of the film is watching Anna being beaten, force fed slop,
pretty much dehumanizing her until they decide to skin her alive,
except for her face. Then she has her “Vision” and the old woman from
before is the only one to hear what Anna sees. All the other members
from this cult gather to hear what Anna has said but at the end she
shoots herself in the head before revealing anything. Anna dies too. The
So yeah, do I really need to go into depth why this whole idea for this underground cult makes no GODDAMN SENSE!!! One, how do they know these “visions” are not hallucinations? People can start seeing things just from being deprived of water for three days. Hell, seeing things can also be a coping mechanism for all of the horrible shit they put these girls through. They have NO scientific basis for this idea either except for a few photos that they claim that these people have martyr vision but I don’t see it what they are talking about.
This movie is horrible on so many levels. Say what you want about ASF, but at least that movie had a somewhat plausible claim for it’s intellectual merits if the context/content wasn’t so unabashedly shocking. Even so, at least whatever depth that movie has CAN be justified in some way it sill has a reason to exist. This film though is the worst kind of movie; This movie shows us cruelty to women and children for some pseudo-philosophical bullshit mixed in with nonsensical religious symbolism for a theory that makes fucking Scientology seem credible. This film has the audacity to try to claim to being “deep” or “smart” when all it is is an excuse to film morally repugnant smut. That is how Martyrs is on some levels WORSE than a Serbian Film.
