Animation of the Animaniacs

Hello folks. I return from a long break because my computer was acting up and I needed to install a new OS. What a wonderful treat we got today from our Guy With The Glasses; A Tribute to the Animaniacs with interviews from the staff themselves. As a HUGE A! fan myself and I want to thank Takineko AKA Valerie for getting all of this together. The results of her actions far exceeded anything I had come to expect from the Nostalgia Critic and it was a real thrill. HERE today I want to bring up something that both NC and the Staff failed to go into much: The Animation of the Animaniacs.

The history of the Animaniacs has been well documented all over the internet. The facts I will bring up here today come from these documents and I've used these to help classify which company belongs to which episode. The "Please Please Pleese Get a Life Foundation" skit was made for these people who spent a good portion of their basement lives putting this stuff together (along with MST3K and Star Trek).  Hell I know of A! fans who got married because of these old forums and chat rooms.  Animaniacs is a wonderful show but recognizing the animation studios of A! often gets over shadowed by it's powerful writing style. Unlike shows like Family Guy, where the writing is obviously stronger then the animation, it's very noticeable when the writing is weak. What makes Animaniacs a great experience is that every episode can look so different and if you didn't enjoy the story, you can always enjoy looking at the cartoon.

Before we get started, I will say that Tom Rugger should get full credit for creating the Warners, but he wasn't in charge of drawing them. The main model designs of the Warners were given to an artist who I STILL don't have the name for (if someone could give me his name I would be thankful for). These Character sheets were given to all of the fallowing Animation Studios to work from and they drew the Warners around those designs.

It was mentioned in the DVD extras that at the last minuet they were given little hair tuffs on their cheeks, but other then that, we do not know much information about the character development and an in depth look at to how the the Warners were drawn (those documents might still be in Japan). This is actually something that makes modern animation different from animation in the past where creators and studio people are more willing to recognize the talents of the individual artist rather then hide your name behind a company medley of stock art.  FYI: the BIBLE that they talk about exists on the internet and contains more character art, but I know there are more drawings and rejected clips out there that we haven't seen and those would be my A! Holy Grail.

So after all that, lets go over each studio:

Toykyo Movie Shinsha, LTD, or TMS from Japan.

This animation company is probally considered to be the best of them all and most people will say their favorite A! episodes were done by them. What they do is on-model but they know how to make the characters zany and expressive. Often times the Asian influence of the studio would carry into the American cartoons they did and ultimately make the American cartoons seem like ANIMES.

This company touched almost every American cartoon back in the 90s, from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Real Ghostbusters, and of course Tiny Toons. They used Babs and Buster to advertise a Japanese Hair Dyer and did the animation for a Sonic cartoon featured on Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn. They have worked on numerous amounts of Japanese cartoons but since the fall of the animation boom of the 90's, their quality and work on American shows has dwindled. On their website they don't even recognize the work they did for their American shows. Plus many of the more recent products they've put out are no where near as good as their American work, certainly if you compare Sonic X to the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. There really isn't a reason for TMS to stop working on American shows other then a Japanese animation movement/or American animation movement where not only did Americans not want to PAY higher prices for Japanese studios but Japanese studios wanted to make more in house cartoons (and a good chance they were sending their cartoons to be animated cheaper in Korea as well).

The next Company, to replace TMS once Warner Brothers lost the budget, was WANG or Wang Film Productions from Taiwan.

WANG's style is noticeably different from all the others and they became the stay hold for A! at the end of the show. They did many of the best episodes but not necessarily the best animation. They're style is usually soft and rounded, and pushed the models to an exaggerated plumpness.  What makes these guys a great studio for A! is that they know how to make the characters cute. They're expressions were pretty bland however and the timing wasn't on-spot. Most of the time it felt like the characters would float on-to the screen because they didn't really know how to make the poses stick or land on real solid ground. WANG's style looked they way it did because they were working on SO MANY cartoons at one time they had to produce quick cheep cartoons at a fast pace, and this would sacrifice quality. This doesn't mean they made terrible cartoons, often times I enjoy looking at WANGS style, even if it's a little bland.

They've done many other cartoons such as Beetlejuice, Bonkers, The Smurfs, and even working the new Phineas And Ferb cartoons.

Next would have to be AKOM, a South Korean Studio

Now I want you to watch that video and tell me it wouldn't have been a lot better if it was animated by TMS or even WANG. Yes it seems that most people MIGHT like these guys because they're the cleanest and the most on-model, but to me that it BOARING to watch. When I was a kid watching this I was disgusted because not only does it sound like they castrated Wakko (listen to Wakko 1st season, he's got a man's voice and then they digitally heightened by the end of the show), but it's so stiff and lacks the real character of the Warners. The best way to characterize AKOM is that they're on-model...and that's about it. They don't stray from the norm, they look at 2 pages worth of expressions and poses, and animate from that. I get the feeling that they weren't hired because they can make the characters look expressive or funny, but they just get the job done.

For someone who doesn't know what makes good animation good, this is probably really well done. I don't know what they're doing now but all I can say is that they animated the The Land Before Time films, that's not including the 1st and only good one by Don Bluth...and that's enough for me to call this one a loose for A!.

Ok Here we have Freelance Animators New Zealand

For anyone who says that Animaniacs has TERRIBLE animation, they were probably watching one of these episodes. Freelance cartoons looks like it was animated by 50 different people at one time, working for free. I'm sure that most of the artists working at this studio were beginning animators so I can't give them crap for being ugly and hideously off-model. Now don't I think they're terrible, because when you really look at the poses and expressions these guys give the Warners they are truly unique and creative, but it's not professional looking at all. It's just an ugly style of animation that floats and melts all over the screen.

The big argument would be that I would have to pick between this and AKOM for being the worst animation studio for A!. I would put AKOM as being the worst based on principle alone. Freelance was doing something different, they're style might've been ugly as hell, but it was more truer animation. AKOM animated like they were animating for Scooby Doo, but had a higher budget, plus they made a lot of other TV shows look boring as hell. Wiki has nothing on Freelance that I can find about their other TV shows, but if THIS is their website it seems that they're an animation school now. Plus Freelance was NOT a cheep Korean studio, give them props for that.

So Lastly is one of my favs, over TMS, is StarToons. Sorry I really couldn't find a full episode or a stream of clips from them but that Ohio joke is the best.

Now I'm sure most people will look at this and say that these guys are pretty ugly, but I love them. They were the ONLY American animation studio working for Warner Brothers at the time. While TMS made the episodes look good, Startoons made them funny. I could name at least 5 StarToons animated cartoons and you would agree that they were fuckin hilarious. They also animated the hilarious Macidamia Nut, Macarana Parody that hasn't been released on DVD yet. They're celebrity caricatures were spot on and hilarious, the expressions were wild, and the pacing was quick and fast. While even the head animator for the studio admitted that they couldn't be as smooth or as nice as the asian studios, they certainly knew something about comedic timing. I really feel this was the best studio for the

On a side note as an A! fan I have to bring this up, and this is true for all of the animation studios but more so with StarToons; You could recognize an artists' style. There was an artist named Neal Sternecky who worked on the Comics that were being published by DC at the same time. The comics covered topics that should've been covered in the TV show, but it's hard to say if they were just as cannon outside of being in the comics. There were equally as funny as the show could be. Neil however, was hired to animate a few inbetweeners for StarToons and his style is so unique you could see it in the show. As a kid, I knew I was becoming an animation guru when I could recognize his style, amongst all the other little scenes everyone else was animating. This was incredibly exciting because it made everything full circle and really brought that personal touch to A!.

The only Problem with Neil's style is that he gives Yakko a boner...ok it's not REALLY a boner but it is an odd line in his pants. I mean look at that, I can get that he's trying to give some extra Pant Folds to look more realistic...but it's more like Yakko's just well hung. XD

I'm going to hurt my brother badly...

So there were three other studios who picked up the slack at the end of Animaniacs but most of their styles aren't recognizable and they only animation one to 5 small little skits. AKOM, StarToons and WANG finish up most of the show and TMS fades away by the end of 3rd season. I do want to end this with a Youtube Poop giving an honorable mention to an animation studio nortorious for wonky animation. I personally didn't find them terrible and for a Pup Named Scooby-Doo, they actually made Scooby-Doo interesting to me, but sadly Kennedy Cartoons will forever remain as the prime example of bad animation...eh somethings just not right with these ones...
