A Look at Disney: Der Fuehrer's Face

It is pretty funny and at the same time, an intriguing way to get the message across of what was going on. Now it many not be true to what was happening, there is a reason why this is my favorite Donald Duck short because it to me at least reminds me how lucky I am to live in the U.S.A. and be given freedoms that I'll admit I sometimes take for granted but I may not always agree with the President but at least I live in a country where I'm allowed to voice my opinion unlike what this short represents. It is true that this short played up The Third Reich for humor but sometimes the best way to instill a message and deal with an enemy is through humor. Y'know even though I say that, I can see why Disney would never shorts like this today because I don't think they'd be able to get away with it.
When I first saw this short it cracked me up beyond belief. You mentioned the pics they were placing between the bomb shells but also the 'vacation with pay' with the exercise gag is quite funny.
I agree that THIS version of the song is not much to look at... erm hear at ... erm whatever! It works better in the short though since it's less charlston more march.
Oh, man, why didn't I talk about that scene? Your so right the vacation quite is funny. Good catch, yeah, this version of the song isn't much to listen to (I guess) and your right it does work better in the short. Still, it is an interesting song to listen to.
Hi Moviefan12. I do believe Donald is the only Disney character who could've pulled this one off. He is just so emotionally extreme, his frustrations are played off extremely well, and no one does "waking up from a nightmare to appreciate how wonderful one's life really is," or as I like to call it, "It's a wonderful Life syndrome," like Donald does. Great review, my friend. I'm looking forward to your next one. Peace.
Exactly, Donald is the only character that could work in a situation like this. With Mickey or Goofy, it would just feel wrong but with Donald, there is just something about his personality that makes this okay in my eyes. The waking up from the nightmare is the best part of this short in my opinion.
I have to agree with PT, Donald is the only character this could have worked with. As for the short itself, i've personally always enjoyed it. I liked how it got its message across, but was also pretty funny. Nice work once again.
As do I, Donald is the only character that could work with this subject and the reason you like it are the same reasons, I enjoy it, it's funny but it is still able to deliver an important message.
I really enjoy this short film, and I believe some people at that time might have had emotional catharsis. I loved the last scene too and how funny it is that we don't see Donald throwing any tomatoes at Hitler in the short. It was also interesting that every single thing (trees, clouds) in the background looked like swastika. This short film won the Academy Award in the following year.
When I first heard "Superman" in the song, I thought of Nietzsche's concept of Übermensch (Super-Human). I am not bashing Nietzsche, but that's very reminiscent of Adolf Hilter's thoughts, that Aryan is the best race on Earth, but I digress. It was a great review, and I am eagerly looking forward to Education for Death and other short reviews.
Education for Death is next week and as for the others, I'm glad your enjoying my shorts reviews. The song is interesting and yeah, I agree that is kinda funny that on the promotional stuff, it shows Donald throwing a tomato at Hitler but I think they used that image because they knew how people felt about him and something like that would convince people to see the short even more.
It's funny that we both thought of Nietzsche when we heard the song.
That is pretty funny.
I like Der Fuehrer's face as while other disney WWII shorts (as I know off) tries to establish symbolic patriotism and sense of morally duty to support the War effort back in the US (in other words you must support the War because it is a patriotic duty) while not being entirely clear in telling audience who the enemy is and when they do at times don't tell us why they are our enemy.
This one does more to try and illustrate the Nazi-horror that is a society whereby people are bound to the will of Hitler in an almost God-like figure. It tries to humanize the war by saying while they are our enemy their are people there suffering and when we see our beloved Donald as a Nazi feels almost as equally a victim of Nazism when having to play fiddle to Hitlers picture which adds more concern to the supposed threat Nazism will do to Europe and even America. It's a beautiful symbolic way of giving audience the reason for war and general sense of liberty and freedom.
Its a clever way of playing fun with fascism through surreal humour and when Donald does wake up learning it was a nightmare (I like how we all note this as being a nightmare and again tries to establish the German people who are too suffering from the grip of Nazism; their living nightmare) and like you said feels thankful for living in America which illustrates the moral code of enforcing patriotism while really establish the threat we are fighting for. Overall good piece of propaganda that puts fire into our belly.
A lot of the WWII shorts from Disney are great and I do agree that they can light a fire in us. Interesting thought about using Donald to show that people in Germany were still humans and didn't care for the conditions they were faced with. I would've never picked up on that.
This is still a brilliant piece of propaganda as it demonizes the enemy and reminds Americans how good they have it. I like this cartoon for its historical context I admit as it really tells a lot about the times. Good work, sir.
Exactly, this short works so well in reminding America what we have and it's almost like, you want to say "you think you have it bad, you probably never had it this bad". If anything, this short should remind U.S. citizens, how lucky they are to live in a country where they get to exercise their rights.
It was an interesting review as always. Although it's doesn't actually show Hitler getting picked on by Donald, it really sometimes gives me a sense of joy. This short film is the reason why I sigh when I hear old, rigid people muttering about Walt Disney being a Nazi.
I've never heard Walt called a Nazi before but I have heard rumors circulating that he was anti-Jew. I choose not to believe that because I don't think there is enough evidence to back it up.
I gotta be honest, this short always bothered me. The ending was great of course, but the whole cartoon as a whole is a bit to dark. That doesn't mean it's bad, just it was never a favorite of mine.

It's been a while since I watched this one, but I remember it being pretty funny.
