How Does One Define A Nerd Movie?
Two weeks ago, I asked if 2012 could be a red letter year in the history of nerd movies. Now
that a few weeks have past (and posting it in the Spoony Experiment
Screening Room) I've been asked a very good question: how do you define a
"nerd movie"?
Now in the broadest sense, a nerd movie (to me) is a film that while it
can be enjoyed by "the straights" (aka normal people who don't spend
good portions of they're time obsessing over pop culture minutiae) are
films that can be analyzed, lauded and vilified by, well, nerds. Now
while that may encompass every film ever made, I'd say that plenty of
films (Pratical Magic, Soul Food, Hotel For Dogs, The Squeeze, ect) wouldn't probably be given half a thought.
Now, finding a nerd movie is probably easier than you think. Honestly,
most times you can just look at the cover of a film to know whether or
not nerds would care about it.
Now this...
THIS is a nerd movie. It's in the fantasy genre, is based on a beloved
fantasy book, and has a giant spider( Okay, the last one is only
important to me).
This...
Is a piece of s#%^, but it's also a nerd movie. (Hey, I never said nerd movies had to specifically be movies nerds love) It's (a horrible) sci-fi movie that's a bastardization adaptation of a beloved cartoon franchise. (That involves John Tuturro getting pissed on. F*#% you, movie.)
