I'll just start off by saying this won't be a typical review. I'm not going to explain the plot because I already did once and it got lost while I tried to put it on here and I'm lazy. Really, you should just watch the DVD. The only thing you really need to know is the six segments are directed by different anime directors and written by different comic book or screenplay writers while still marrying the stories together into one piece. If you're a big anime nut, then you'll probably recognize work from the people that did Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Ghost in the Shell, Noir, etc. Anyway, my thoughts.
72 minutes of eye candy. It is simply beautiful. If you're a Batman fan, you'll love the different takes on him. Some are stronger (Work Through Pain and Deadshot) than others (Have I Got A Story For You), but the worst of them is still pretty damn good. Kevin Conroy does the voice for each segment, you'll probably remember him from doing the voice for Batman on the animated series, Batman Beyond, and Justice League over the span of 15 years. I was so happy that he did this since I've been a fan from the beginning. He even somehow pulls off the voice of the more typical anime hero, young and triangular with hair over his eyes and a thinner frame, which wasn't the original idea until he proved he could do it.
Any fan of Batman should at least rent this if not blindingly buy it online or from a local store. It has a strong comic book feel by having several writers and artists do different pieces of one story, all giving different perspectives of the Dark Knight. I may not be a big fan of all the anime styles, but I love every single visual interpretation of Gotham.
The 2-disc special features are a little lacking if you already have the '90s animated series on DVD. I already have all the episodes they put on disc two, but the two documentaries were welcomed additions to my Batman collection. The commentary is also delightfully informative.
