I had honestly at first not heard of Tell Tale games but once I looked into it I recalled the Sam and Max games that have a cult following. Being a fan of point and click adventures I was still excited, I was even more excited that I wouldn't have to wait for very long at all before seeing this game on this new Wii Ware. But it was just as quick that my faith began to wain. First issue I had was with some of the voice acting in the demos/trailers. I don't know why but it sounded off. The Chaps were still at the helm but it did not sound like the same voices at times. But I brushed it off I was sure all dialouge would be fixed before the release and they can't be perfect all the time. For the most part I was right! There were a few spots that my eyebrow kind turned up to an odd pitch and Marzipan never set right with me but they were the characters.
Then we had the other issue some of the graphics looked well...lame. We were told that they were trying to stay as close to the flash toons as they could and they did that very well I think; though Homestar looked a little like his old version more then the recent one. But still I never did quite get why its had to be some jagged, the Sam and Max toons had a very styleistic art but it was smooth lookin at least. I know the Wii has the capabilities.
Then we hit another point of failure, they missed the first release date. It wasn't a big deal but annoying to say the least!
Then THEY MISSED ANOTHER ONE! But no fear we could sign up for a newsletter and get a free Sam and Max episode to play! This actually did help me forget about the fact that I was still not playing that game; for about 5 hours! This brings me to the other pre release issue; these games were short and not very cheap. Knowing that the Wii version would cost 10 bucks (I could pray for 8 but who was I kidding) that kinda made me feel like this may not be worth it. These episodes that I have to download seperatly from my already payed for internet subscription was gonna cost me as much as a top shelf game from my local store. Yikes! Besides waiting so long between each episode the length of the episode just kinda scared me away.
But there I was when it came out forking over 10 bucks and couldn't wait to play it! Now here are all the problems this game had...
The story was...ok...it wasn't awesome, it wasn't bad, just ok. It was Strong Bad and it was Homestar but I've watched better on the site for free. But now I get to interact with it and it was just...ok
The game was, fun, decently difficult but it didn't flow very well. It was still fun and I just had to beat it but it could of been better.
The Jokes were...umm...ok. Not only were they just ok but there weren't a lot of them. Once you talked to someone the first time there were not many reasons to go back and see if you could get a laugh. I giggled a couple times but not much. Some of the jokes were also hidden as part of the game play so you really missed laughing when say trying to do the race because you were trying to figure out what to do to win.
-------------SPOILERS BELOW---------
Going along with the jokes the character interaction could of been better, and some of the character explinations.
Why wasn't the cheat a real interactable character? I just kicked him into a dryer and then he got back out, weak. The cheat should of been there with some jokes on some CAPER!
Where was Strong Mad? Oh wait he was..being a guard for the KOT. Huh?
Strong Sad had an interesting roll, popping up places at random. But umm...idk just seemed weird.
The mini games were fun but not replayable. The Teen Girl Squad comic was humerous like the first time and then once you got all the pieces it was fun to get all the points and it was a funny comic for the series. But that was it, really you get abour 4 run throughs before its tedious and not worth it.
Snake Boxer is fun but its a standard game from the site and not much to really mention.
I can't play Trogdor!
So far this probably seems like a decent game and it is, these are all nit picky problems. But then the real kicker is the glitches and errors. Here is a list from the Wiki that I have confirmed. The first list is nit picky but here they are:
At the non-garden party, the rollover for Marzipan and Homestar is spelled "MARZIPAN & HOMSETAR".
In Strong Bad's photo booth there is a clickable area above the camera. Clicking here turns the cursor into the Max shirt from the Telltale store (also occasionally chosen at random as Young Sam's costume in Sam and Max Episode 202: Moai Better Blues and Episode 204: Chariots of the Dogs). However, when put on Strong Bad, the shirt is yellow and has a picture of a dog on it.
The subtitles are incorrect in several places
When kicking the Cheat into the dryer, one of the subtitles misspells Pixelated as Pixilated.
Homestar Runner sings "Do do-do do dooo dooo, do do-do do dooo" but the subtitles say "Do do-do do dooo dooo, do do-do do dooo dooo".
While Strong Bad says "some French guy said I should beat you up", the subtitles quote him as saying "some French guy said that I should beat you up".
While most abbreviations have an apostrophe, no apostrophe is transcribed when Homestar says "puddin sack".
In several responses from the Drive-Thru Whale, the "O" in "Blubb-O's" is lowercase.
When the Drive-Thru Whale says "'Nurer' spelled backwards is 'rerun.'" the word "in" is transcribed rather than "is".
During Marzipan's answering machine message, the word "polluted" is misspelled as "poluted" in the subtitles.
When Strong Bad finds the last page of the Snake Boxer V manual, the subtitles refer to the "SECRET FROBIDDEN LEVEL.
In one of the possible insults Strong Bad can say to Bubs, the word "arm" is misspelled as "armed."
In viewing the sign on Bubs' Concession Stand, Strong Bad begins a sentence with "If I ever had any money" but the subtitles start it with "And if I ever had any money".
During one comment about the banner on Marzipan's gazebo, Strong Bad says "in which case" but the word "which" was left out in the subtitles.
As Strong Bad comments that Snake Boxer 5 is "so much better than the unfortunate Snake Boxer 4: Lady Snake Parade" there is an unnecessary comma after the word "unfortunate".
HERE ARE THE REAL GLITCHES:
If the subtitles are turned off, they will be erroneously enabled when Strong Bad checks his email. They will remain enabled afterwards until Strong Bad leaves his house, although the Settings screen will show them as Off. Toggling them on and off again under the Settings will rectify the problem.
While wearing the tech shirt near Strong Bad's house, in extended play, geometry issues will occur, resulting in what looks like a blue wall shooting out from the shirt. This also occurs in other locations in the game. (This is real annoying!)
If the Luxa Lounger is extended (when it is unextended) and the radio set to the Latin music in Extended Play, the conga line will re-form even though it won't move. (how could they miss that?)
When the Luxa Lounger is set back the conga line will disappear, but Homestar, Marzipan, Coach Z, Bubs and the King of Town will appear where they were when the party was still going on. These characters cannot be selected, and Strong Bad can walk right through them. (see above)
As Strong Bad wears the Homestar head, it is sometimes invisible, so you see Strong Bad grab nothing. (yep that confused me a few times when trying to figure out what to do with that head)
Wii Version
If widescreen mode is turned on, talking to Coach Z in extended play results in the game crashing, requiring a hard reset. In addition, many of the cut scenes that play throughout the game will sometimes freeze, also requiring a hard reset. (seems like a big issue to miss)
After Strong Bad plays Snake Boxer 5, he gets teleported to the Computer Room and then back to his room.
If the game is saved while in the photo booth while wearing a shirt and then immediately turned off, then when you start only the collar of the shirt will be visible.
PC Version
Occasionally Homestar, Marzipan, Bubs, Coach Z, Strong Mad, Strong Sad or Strong Bad's eyes are not visible upon entering an area. The same may also occur with Strong Mad's mouth.
So there we have it! With all the small issues, big glitches, and good things this rounds out to be..average; just average!
I would give it a 6 out of 10. That really dissapoints me, I wanted this game to be good. For ten bucks and then 50 in the long run thats just not acceptible. Hopefully the next episode is better.
I've been a fan of the site since my friend showed me the sbemail army a couple years ago. Game's great. Not as many gliches on the Wii version. Dunno about the PC. I did notice one glitcch on the Wii version though. ometimes the Homestar head doesn't show when Strong Bad puts it on.
