Hello and welcome to another edition of Daffy's Top 11. Why top 11? Well, I don't know. ‘Cause it just sounds right.
I know I just did one of these. But something clicked in my mind and I just had to get it out.
Being that the ‘Dog Days of Summer' are almost upon us, I figured, "What better way to celebrate the demise of Summer ‘08 then with the Top 11 Coolest Cartoon Dogs?"
This list wasn't as ‘ruff' to make as the last one. You see what I did there? Ah? Ah?... Never mind.
One more bad joke before we begin:
"Who let the dogs out?"
As you sit there shouting "Woof woof," let me start the Top 11 Coolest Cartoon Dogs.
11) Astro (The Jetsons)
Although this dog was part of a pretty classic show, he loses points only because I don't remember him doing much. I remember he talked, he always greeted George at the door, he got George stuck on the treadmill, and... that's all I remember. But, he's still cool, and he's a great way to start off the countdown.
10) Droopy (Tex Avery)
This dog looks like a sad sap. But, he was still cool. I love the way he could be everywhere at once. He always caught the bad guys. Wait. That's not entirely true. He always annoyed the bad guys into turning in themselves. If that doesn't make you an awesome dog, I don't know what does.
9) Pluto (Disney)
Mickey's faithful pet, this dog was the only classic Disney character (i.e. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Daisy, and this canine) that couldn't talk. And why is that exactly? I mean, Goofy was a dog and he could talk. Well, for whatever reason, they pressed the mute button on this pooch. But, he was still funny. I, for one, still laugh at the Christmas special where he chases Chip and Dale through a Christmas tree.
8) Spike (Tom and Jerry)
There's not all that much to say about this guy. He was always beating up on poor Tom for no good reason. Can't he give the cat a break? He already has a dang annoying mouse on his tail. Does he need the abuse of a dog? Well, he's on this list because the way he beat up on Tom was hilarious. Also, I was afraid he'd beat me up if I didn't include him.
7) Sam the Sheep Dog (Looney Tunes)
Talk about a character that hardly moved. This dog was always guarding the sheep from the notorious Ralph the Wolf. But, even though he never moved from that one spot, he always managed to keep the sheep safe from harm. This is one dog I would definitely trust to guard my house.
6) Underdog (you guessed it, Underdog)
"There's no need to fear! Underdog is here!" Good God, what a catchy catch phrase. Not only is this one cool dog, but he's the only one I know of that is actually a super hero. (I know what you're thinking. I'll get to him in a second.) He was funny and heroic at the same time. It's a shame they ruined this series with a live action movie. No, I didn't see it. But, it just looks SO bad.
5) Hong Kong Phooey (repeat name here)
The only dog to actually know Kung Fu, this dog was definitely deserves a spot on this list because of that. He knows how to do karate. What other dog knows how to do that? Okay, I'll be honest. I'm not old enough to remember much about either this or the Underdog cartoons. I just remember a few things that I used to watch on Boomerang from time to time. So, forgive me if I wasn't very descriptive with these two.
4) Brain (Inspector Gadget)
Truly this dog was the ‘brains' behind Inspector Gadget's team. He was even smarter then Penny. Whenever Gadget had a mission, Brain would always follow making sure that nothing bad happened to him. I remember he would where a disguise so nobody would recognize him. It was about as affective as the overcoat the Ninja Turtles used, but nobody recognized him. So, he was always able to save the day without anyone knowing it was him.
3) Porkchop (Doug)
I've said it once before, but it still holds up even now: This was definitely the Snoopy of the 90s. He was so cool he lived in an igloo dog house. He was smart, loyal, and funny. Not to mention he always got the ladies. No doubt about it, he was the coolest dog Nick ever came up with.
2) Scooby Doo (Too many to mention)
I just know I would have gotten hate mail for not including this one. I know it sounds like I don't like him, but I do. It's just.... Here, let me explain. The first Scooby Doo cartoons were classic. And the Scooby Doo Movies TV series (the one where he meets Don Knots, the Globe Trotters, and the Addams Family) was really cool, too. It's when this show started becoming some sort of corporate symbol is when the shit REALLY hit the fan. I think it started with the first live action movie. I'm sure we were all psyched about it. But, when we finally saw it, we were extremely disappointed. Wait. That's not where it started. It was the straight to video animated movies (starting with Scooby Doo on Zombie Island) where this series started going down hill. No, it was the series ‘What's New Scooby Doo?' that did it. Well, wherever it started, this corporate logo just went down hill for me. But, he was a cool cowardly dog when he first started and that's all that counts.
And the number one coolest cartoon dog of all time is...
1) Snoopy (Peanuts)
If you didn't see this coming, then you obviously don't know your cartoons very well. This is definitely the coolest dog ever to be put on paper. He may arguably be the coolest cartoon ever made. Not only was he cool, he was the best trained dog I'd ever seen. He could walk on two legs, dance, cook, clean, and even decorate his house for Christmas. He was so cool, he wasn't too cool for school. (Who cares if that doesn't make sense?) Not only was he cool, all his characters were cool. Let's name a few, shall we? The Flying Ace, Joe Cool, Flashbeagle, and even the Easter Beagle wasn't that bad. All this and the fact that he's loyal to Charlie Brown make him the number 1 Coolest Cartoon Dog.
So, there you have it. A list of what I believe are the Coolest Cartoon Dogs of all time. I would put another joke here, but I'm all out of dog puns.
*the crowd cheers*
Alright, alright. This has been Daffy's Top 11.
I'm Daffy.
And yeah, every time the whole Pluto-Goofy issue comes to mind, I spend the next minutes just thinking about it. I assume he's a mutant dog, but then that means Mickey and Donald and Minnie are all mutant animals as well.
the notorious Ralph the Wolf.
Oh YEAH... I remember back when Wile E. Coyote was simply, 'Ralph'.
That was SO confusing to me as a kid...Yes, I know they're two totally different characters, but how come they look Exactly the Same! Oh well, they're both awesome, though Ralph is a bit lesser-known that Wile E.
Great list, and I can definitely see why you didn't include Triumph, you were obviously going for NOSTALGIC catoon dogs (though, you should've written that somewhere in the beginning...)
WHAT NO COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG???
Nope.quote]
Forget Everything I said in that last comment about anti-war and stuff...

Here's what I MEANT to say:

Did you know that there was a Playstation game based on those cartoons called Sheep Raider? Critics didn't care for it, but back then I loved it. Pure Looney Tunes awesomeness.

you are more younger than that guy..
you are of the late 90 and early 2000 like me
By all means use my comment and name if it helps get your point across
Apart from that, good list.

i'll do a show list and try to get a shot of the title screen from wikipedia.
instead of astro i would have included Muttley. i think that was his name. every time something would happen he would always snicker. even if his owner( by far the biggest stereotypical villain) was the one getting hurt. even though he was evil he's still cool to me
yah muttley was awesome. that show was the coolest cold war propoganda ever!
