I've already proved that the scariest things about horror movie baddies are their weapons. But, what if the killer possesses no real weapons? Take werewolves, vampires, and zombies for example. Most of the time, these types of monsters don't use a weapon to do away with their prey. Nope. They use their hands, claws, teeth, anything to make sure their victim ends up dead. (Though, technically you could say that they also eat their victims afterwards. But that's beside the point.) So, what makes these guys scary? I think in these cases, it's the way they all look. I mean, sure the knowledge that the can actually do things to you with only their bare hands is also very frightening. But sometimes knowledge just isn't enough.
So, in the beginning, they had the Wolf Man, Dracula, and the original Night of the Living Dead. And all these characters were scary in their time. But as special effects grew more modern, people were no longer frightened by harry men, fanged pale guys, and people painted grey with black circles around their eyes. People were looking for more gruesome things to provoke their scared side. Naturally, Hollywood was happy to comply. They started making villains who were not only evil and scary, they were also gruesome and hideous.
Not only was Hollywood making their villains uglier, they were also giving them abilities above and beyond just mind control and immortality. Some villains could now bend time, warp reality, and bring your worst fears to wild, screaming life. The result was bigger, better, and badder killers.
I want to talk about the few killers who, I think, are the most hideous and powerful. Grab your vomit bags. It's about to get disgusting around here.
Freddy Krueger

This guy really gives me the serious creeps. And not just because of his looks. I first saw this movie when I was 8 years old. Or, at least I tried to. Literally three minutes into the flick, I got way too scared and I was forced to turn it off. I haven't been able to watch it ever since.
Luckily, we now have the internet. So, I know all about Freddy's exploits without ever having to see his films. (Yet, I was able to see Freddy vs. Jason and I wasn't scared at all. I find it weird.) This is one seriously badass dude. He can travel into people's dreams, control the dream, and kill them in any number of painful ways. It's no wonder why I was terrified of this guy. He was one scary ass bastard.
Pinhead

From the deepest bowels of Hell comes one of the most sadistic evil bastards to ever scare the crap out of everyone who sees him. I think one of the scariest things about this guy is his love of torture. Instead of outright killing his victims, he loves to experiment with their level of pain. Usually, this constitutes the use of hooks and chains to rip his victims limb from limb. I'll say it again: this guy is one seriously sadistic evil bastard.
I think one of the problems is those nails in his head. Of course, they make him look extremely grotesque. And they serve to make you fear him even more. But they have to be hitting his brain and making him this way. Why doesn't someone get a hammer and bring the nails out? I'm sure it would do Pinhead a world of good.
The Djinn from Wishmaster

The evil embodiment of the term "Be careful what you wish for," this is certainly one creepy looking guy. If I remember from CultconXIX's review and my own viewing of the films correctly, this guy is also a demon from Hell. Only, this guy does something that no other demonic killer has ever done before. He actually grants people their fondest wish. So, he's like a genie. Only, when he gives people what they wish for, he gives them exactly what they wish for. Eventually, the wish ends up killing them. For example, in one of the films (I don't remember which) a woman wishes for some ‘killer' sex. One snap of the fingers later, she starts feeling like she's having sex. At first, she likes it. Then, her bones start to get crush from the thrusts of... whatever it is she is feeling.
So, other then his psychotic way of fulfilling wishes, this guy looks seriously... there is just no other way to say it, creepy. If I were asked what I thought a demon would actually look like, I would refer the person who asked the question to this picture. I would never fuck with a villain who looked like this guy.
American Werewolf in London Transformation Scene

Of all the werewolf movies ever made, there was never one that made the transformation from man to werewolf look so painful, so horrifying, so freaking awesome as the one in American Werewolf in London. This scene shows you just what happens if you are bitten by a werewolf. It shows you just how painful it is to become a werewolf. And boy, it does its job well. With every shift of bone and grown of fangs, we all cringed with pain. I swear, the first time I saw this scene, I thought my bones were stretching and reshaping. And when he finishes changing, he's one scary looking beast.
Reagan MacNeil/Devil in The Exorcist

Who would have thought a 12 year old girl could be so terrifying and threatening? Or that she could be made to look so gross? Besides looking like she was beaten with an ugly stick, stabbed, run over, and left in the lake to rot, she is one evil bitch. Of course, I'm sure the Devil has something to do with it. Not to mention the fact that she has all sorts of creepy powers: telekinesis, levitation, the ability to barf pea soup, and the ability to spin her head 360 degrees. Put it all together and you get one frightening possessed little girl.
We really gotta hand it to the geniuses (or is it genii?) who worked their magic to bring these characters to life. They really know how to make us cringe with disgust and squeal in fear. Without them, we probably wouldn't be as afraid of Freddy, Pinhead, the devil girl, the Djinn, or any number of other great evil baddies.
Now, I know what you're thinking. "What about all those zombie movies that make us barf in all their disgustingness?" Well, let me explain. In my opinion, zombie movie horror make-up is a WHOLE topic in and of itself. There are a ton of zombie movies out there (among them Night of the Living Dead, Evil Dead, Shaun of the Dead, and others) and choosing just one would have a lot of people on my ass about another. That, and the fact that I've never really seen any of these movies if only because I have a very sensitive gag reflex. So, I'm sorry for not including the undead horde in this list.
So, there it is. A list of what I think are some of the most disgusting evil bastards and bitches in horror movies of modern times. And there are still a thousand more out there. The vamps in From Dusk ‘Til Dawn, that Poltergeist scene with the guy pulling off his skin, and the villain destruction scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark are all other things that were all hideously disgusting. But, what are your favorite disgusting horror movie moments and characters? Feel free to post it here.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I've gotta empty my airsickness bag. Some of these things really took a toll on my stomach. Until next time, I'm Daffy, giving you all the things that go bump in the night... with a few laughs along the way.
Damn, that Evil 12-year-old still freaks me out! Good job on the pea soup comment.
So, anyway, to get into this.
This s really cool!
I think you captured the feel for what they portray nicely.
Especially with the turning-into-werewolf scene from An American Werewolf In London, that had me feeling the same thing. It is still the most horrible transformation ever in movie history (of werewolves).
Currently, I don't really have any memorable faces to remember unless you count Leprechaun and Troll...those were great works of make-up there.

Also all horror villains above have humane characteristics: if we talk about ugly-looking mosters, then I must mention the mutated, slimy crawlies from (John Carpenter's) The Thing. Godsdamn those things look ugly even today.
And I think is was a good decision to leave Zombie-flicks out of this one. There could be a whole other post about the most crotesque looking zombie (I think this would be the jawless zombie in the beginning of Day of the Dead) or the most disgusting/gruesome got-killed-by-zombie-scene.
