Daffy Reviews: The Daring Darkwing Duck

"I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the winged scourge that pecks at your nightmares. I am DARKWING DUCK!!!!"

A puff a smoke and the masked mallard makes a decent dramatic entrance.

If you haven't figured it out already, I'm talking about Disney's Darkwing Duck. This is, no doubt about it, one of my favorite Disney shows to ever come out.

And, I just know that you're thinking to yourself, "Hey. Didn't this guy say he was going to review old Nick shows?" Well, no. I said I would review shows from the 90s. And, since this one made its debut in 1991, I'd say it falls under that category. Wouldn't you?

Okay. Getting back to the review...

Back in the early 90s, after the incredible success of Duck Tales (Woo hoo!), Disney said, "Alright. They like ducks. So, let's give ‘em ducks." So, they came up with Darkwing Duck.

For those of you who don't know (i.e. those of you who have lived in a box for the past 20 years [no offence, Chester]), this show is about a guy named Drake Mallard who one day decided, "If Batman can do it, so can I." So, he put on a purple cape, a purple hat, and a purple mask, grabbed his gas gun (‘cause, honestly, who DOESN'T have one of those?), and went out to fight crime.

Well, okay. I admit those probably aren't his EXACT origins, but let me explain something here. In the series, there are so damn many origin stories, it's hard to pick out which one is the right one. Like one that is a kinda Superman rip-off, one that takes place in Drake's prom, and one that said he started out MUCH younger then that. Actually, in that last one, DW (as his faithful sidekick calls him) traveled back in time and "accidently" turned his younger self into a mini hero.

As you can see, it gets pretty confusing. So, the less you think about it, the better.

Anyway, as our hero fights crime, he has some friends to help him. There's Launchpad. You remember him? He was Scrooge's pilot in Duck Tales (Woo hoo!!!). What happened to his job with the McDuck's? I have no freaking clue. Don't ask me.

He also has an adopted daughter named Gosalyn. She's a girl that DW saved in the series pilot "Darkly Dawns the Duck." After being saved from the evil Taurus Bulba, she pretty much hooks herself to him, and he adopts her.

Now, every super hero needs some super villain butt to kick, right? Well, DW is no different. He has a whole mess of evildoers who are always wreaking havoc. Let's take a look at a few of them, shall we?

Megavolt: DW's main archrival who has the power to control electricity. Bet you didn't guess THAT by his name, did ya?

Dr. Bushroot: This guy was more of a menace then an actual villain to me. He was a duck turned walking/talking plant after an experiment went horribly wrong. He can also control plants.

Quackerjack: He was sorta like a duck version of Batman's Joker. Only, this one is maybe a THOUSAND times less creepy.

The Liquidator: A guy who can turn into water and manipulate it at will.

And, finally...

NegaDuck: This guy is the exact opposite of DW.  Meaning, he's an evil version of our hero. What you don't know is that he comes from an alternate reality called the Negaverse. This all comes out in the episode "Life, the Negaverse, and Everything."

Darkwing also has a mess of friends to help him out along the way. I'm only mentioning a few.

Gizmoduck: All in all, I think he was pretty funny and awesome. He was a guy that wore a robot suit in order to fight crime.

Morgana: She is a witch that loves DW. Her spells don't always work out so well. But, that's why we love her.

The Muddlefoots: These were Drake's neighbors. Their kid, Honker, is the one who helped the most. The rest were just nuisances.

So, those are some of the characters. Put them all together, and you got one heck of a show. But, there's one thing about the show that I liked more then anything else...

"LET'S GET DANGEROUS!!!"

This was DW's catchphrase. And, damn it, it was catchy as hell. (Duck Tales Woo Hoo!!!)

I would use it whenever I felt the situation called for it.

Johnny (aka innocent bystander): Daffy!!! We're about to go down a steep hill using only our bikes!

Me: Let's get dangerous!

Johnny: Daffy!!! We are about to go on one of the fastest rollercoasters ever.

Me: Let's get dangerous!

Johnny: Daffy!!! Today's lunch is mystery meat!

Me: Let's get dangerous!

I loved to say it. It just rolled of the tongue. And I still say it. Of course, nobody really gets it anymore. But, oh well...

Another cool thing about this show was the theme song. Don't worry. I'm not going to make another Duck Tales (Woo hoo!!!!!!) reference. The Darkwing theme song was one of the coolest Disney ever came up with. It was catchy and not to mention it went perfectly with the show. And, I hate to admit it, but I also like a music video Disney made for one of the home video releases of the show. I'm sure if you look hard enough on the internet, you'll find what I'm talking about. Hell, why don't I just post it here.

I hope that worked. Anyways, corny, ain't it? Oh well. I like it anyways. The only thing I could do without is all those kids dancing in the video. I think their parents needed the money or something.

So, that about does it. A review of one of the coolest duck themed superheroes ever made.

Oh, wait. I forgot about the corny "in our hearts" ending.

This cartoon definitely holds a place in the most heroic parts of our hearts.

This has been a review by Daffy.

PS Just to remind you all, I am taking requests for Top 11s, 90s show reviews, and movie reviews. Please either comment or PM me with anything you would like me to do.

I watched this show so much when I was younger and the theme song definitely stuck in my head. And like you, I always wandered how Launchpad managed to be in both cartoons (although I vaguely remember an episode that had Gizmoduck going from Duckberg to Duck Gotham, lol).

Boy, I wish they aired this show again.

I think the city in Darkwing Duck was St. Canard. But, I get what you mean.

And I wish this show was back on, too.

Right! I was trying to remember the name of the city. Guess it needs to be in the theme song to be remembered ("Life is like a hurricane here in Duckberg. DuckTales! Woo-hoo!" Damn it).

To be fair, I don't think Disney just decided to slap ducks on everything in the early 90s. Preceding Ducktales, you had The Wuzzles and Gummi Bears (which were the Saturday Morning staple for That Guy and myself in the mid-80s). Keep in mind, too, that the Disney Afternoon was originally comprised of Rescue Rangers (all rats and munks and flies), Tailspin (all jungle critters), and Goof Troop (dogs). Really, only Ducktales and Darkwing Duck operated in the same duck universe, and I consider that the byproduct of a spinoff series.

You might be able to make a better argument that DARKWING DUCK actually spawned the whole duck phenomenon, since the duck shows that followed it were Quack Attack and The Mighty Ducks. But I never watched those cause a) I was already way too old for those shows, and b) they sucked ass. Or to be more precised: really fowl. Booooo... hiss... I know, I know, I'm no pun at all!

That said, this show rocked. It practically created the "I am the noun which verbs your noun" superhero catch phrase, and also paved the way for later classics like The Tick. On the animation side, it had fantastic art design. St. Canard (GREAT NAME for a Gotham Duckburg, btw) had REAL atmosphere for a kids show -- as did most of Disney's earlier toons. And the cast was appropriately weird. Personally, my favorites were Megavolt, Quackerjack, and Negaduck (whom I always thought was called MEGAduck). Looks like I was wrong. Thanks Daffs, for destroying yet another childhood illusion. smilies/grin.gif

Correction...

I meant to say Quack Pack. Quack Attack is what they replaced Donald Duck Presents with somewhere in the early 90s. Donald Duck Presents was a series of old Disney shorts, and also the reason I never had my homework done from the 2nd through 3rd grade. Quack Pack is an inferior spinoff in the greater Ducktales universe. And also a piece of crap.

Never babysit any friends' kids who proclaim their for that show. It makes afternoons exceedingly annoying.

Wow.

I'm honored that That Other Guy would take the time out of his day to comment on something I did. Thank you, sir.

That said, I agree with your assessment of Quack Pack. It was worked WAY to hard to be "cool" for all the kids. All it succeded in doing was sucking major ass.

I can also see where you're going with the atmosphere thing. It had perfect atmoshpere for a kids superhero show. More atmoshpere then anything I can think of right now, THAT'S for sure.

Anyways, about destroying your 'childhood illusion', no problem. Any time. smilies/grin.gif
