"Scooby Dooby Doo. Where are you? We got some work to do now. Scooby Dooby Doo. Where are you? I'm writing the review now."
Being that all day today Cartoon Network decided to do a marathon of ‘Scooby Do, Where Are You?', I've decided to write a review of what I consider to be one of the best mystery cartoons ever made.
Where do I start with Scooby Doo? It was a show made by the incredible animation team of Hanna-Barbera. Recognize the name? Of course you do!!! They're the ones who came up with other classics such as The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Johnny Quest, and an extreme multitude of others. So, yeah, they're a pretty famous duo. If you've never heard of them or any of their creations, you obviously don't own a TV.
For those of you who don't know the story behind the gang, I'll give you a very brief run down: Some teens and their dog go around the world solving mysteries. That's about it. Come to think of it, where the heck are these kids' parents? Do they even know that their kids are globetrotting, mystery solving heroes? Do they care that their kids always run into kidnappers and robbers? Shouldn't these kids be in school? Or, if they're old enough, shouldn't they have a job? I mean, I don't remember them ever getting paid to catch those bad guys. What was the point of it?
Well, whatever the reason, these kids were always out solving mysteries that usually had to do with some guy in a mask scaring everyone so he or she could get gold or whatever. Now, let's get to know our crime fighting team, shall we?
Fred: The leader of the group. Or, if he isn't the leader, then he's really bossy. And, what's with the ascot? Gay undertones anyone?
Daphne: Definitely the group's most attractive member. She doesn't really add anything to the group. Mostly, she's there to be the damsel in distress whenever necessary.
Velma: The real brains behind the operation. She always solved the mystery. But, it seems that her one weakness is one that happens all the time. She can't see without her glasses. And that happens pretty dang often.
Shaggy: A cowardly hippie type character. He's easily the most cowardly person in the group. And why? He basically makes a living going from town to town looking through old haunted mansions. Shouldn't he get used to it after a while?
Scooby Doo: The team's mascot. It's a dog... that can talk. I wish I could teach my dog how to talk. I would totally make money off of it. Why didn't the team think of that? They would have made some serious money off a talking dog.
So, that's the team. One thing that I want to know is how they all came together and just decided to go and solve mysteries. It doesn't look like they'd have anything in common. What brought them together?
Well, I guess we'll never figure it out.
In any case, they met up with some pretty memorable villains on this show. You know the ones I'm talking about. I'm talking about the classic creeps: The Creeper, The Black Knight Ghost, Miner Forty-niner, Captain Cutler's ghost, The Ghost Clown, The Wolfman, and so many others that it would be tough to count. I just loved it when a crazy hippie style song would come on when the chase scene would commence.
Now, after the success with ‘Scooby Doo, Where Are You?', there came the inevitable spin off shows. Some of them weren't too bad while others were just awful. The New Scooby Doo Movies, The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo, and A Pup Named Scooby Doo were a couple I enjoyed as a kid. The ones I really hated were the ones with Scrappy Doo. Good God almighty was this dog annoying. I just wanted to drop kick him every time I saw him. Was there a real need for this character? And how come he can speak much better English then Scooby? He's a dog too. He should also have some trouble with it. The really crappy spin-offs are the ones that came out recently: What's New Scooby Doo? and Shaggy and Scooby Doo Get a Clue. Don't get me started.
Along with a couple of TV series, Scooby got a lion's share of movies. The early ones were some I really liked. Scooby Doo and the Boo Brothers, Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School, and Scooby Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf were all movies I adored as a child. When the started making new ones with better animation is when they started getting bad. It started with Scooby Doo on Zombie Island and just deteriorated onward from there.
So, being that Scooby was a great hit, and Hollywood just has to take a giant dump on all our childhood memories, they made a live action movie not too recently. Was I the only one completely disappointed with it? The plot wasn't that good, the characters were caricatures of themselves, and that plot twist had me steaming. The sequel was even worse. I hope to one day forget those two movies ever existed.
Well, I guess that's about it. Other then a few set backs, Scooby Doo was one of the coolest cartoons about a mystery solving cartoon dog I'd ever seen.
WARNING!!! Corny ‘in our hearts' ending to follow.
Scooby and Mystery, Inc., will hold a place in the most mysterious parts of our hearts forever.
This has been a review by me.
I'm Daffy.
PS This episode is dedicated to Tina and Kelsey, my internet partners in crime... fighting.
b) Can't you take up a Chatroom or Forum Thread, instead of constantly getting 'free' comments. I consider this cheating, Daffy...
ctooner (261 comments) Ghostmayhem (253 comments)Yeah, I'm still counting....
c) Good review, but you failed to go into depth about the terrible "Feature-Length" movies, and you didn't mention such classics as Scooby-Doo meets Batman or Don Knotts...
I love that Don Knotts episode.
Apparently, he's in a competition of the comments with me. I didn't really realize it.
