Hello and welcome to the first ever edition of....
Daffy Gives Tribute To...
You know, the super heroes of our age really have a lot of work cut out for them. They have to save the world, keep the streets safe for people they don't even know, keep their girlfriend/boyfriend happy, make sure their friends and family remain oblivious to the fact that they are superheroes, and maintain their secret identity in the real world. Not to mention keep their job, pay the bills, and everything else regular people also have to deal with.
In spite of all that, they still somehow manage to try to keep their audience entertained. How do they do this? Well, wearing some colorful and flashy clothing help to keep us focused on them. They always come up with witty retorts whenever taunted. They fight in ways that seem overly intricate even when time is of the essence. And, finally, they always whip out their clever catchphrase at the exact right moment.
As a result, many of the superhero catchphrases of our days have been pounded into us until they were pretty much engraved into our foreheads. We always knew just when they were about to whip it out (the catch phrase, you pervs) and, if watching a show or movie, we'd always mouth the words. We even started using them in every day conversations, even when it didn't make any sense. There's no doubt about it, the catchphrase is definitely one of the most important parts of a superhero.
Knowing this, I tracked down some of the most memorable superhero catch phrases and have decided to make a few comments for each. So, let's get down to business.
"Courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man."
"My spider sense is tingling!"
"With great power comes great responsibility."
All the above catch phrases courtesy of... well, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Spidey has got to be one of the wittiest heroes out there. This wall-crawler really knows how to kick butt both physically and verbally. And it is because of his smart mouth and sarcastic comments that he is my favorite superhero. That and the swinging around New York City kicking bad guy butt looks really cool.
The only thing I don't really get is the whole ‘tingling' thing. Can't they have used some other word? Buzzing? Vibrating? I don't know. I just think ‘tingling' sounds really stupid.
"Faster then a speeding bullet, more powerful then a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound."
"Look! Up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's Superman!"
Superman is definitely a classic super hero. I think one of the best things about this guy is the fact that he's so generic. I mean, the powers he has are pretty basic in super hero standards: flight, super strength, heat vision, x-ray vision. Not to mention his super suit: the ‘S' emblem on blue spandex with a red cape. Hell, even his catch phrases sound a bit cliché. All of this adds up to your pretty normal super hero. But Superman is definitely far from normal. He's just...well, at the risk of sounding generic and redundant, super. I just love that second catch phrase if only because it is so dang easy to twist into something satirical.
The only thing that bothers me about this one is the problem with the glasses. How can nobody recognize Clark Kent without glasses? It makes no sense. I could go into a whole rant about this, but, to save on time, I'll just move right along.
"I'm Batman."
Short, sweet, and to the point. That's what I love about that line. In contrast to Superman, Batman is definitely not an average super hero. Why? Because he has none of the cool powers that say ‘I am a super hero.' Instead, he has money by the bucket load and a belt full of gadgets. He also has martial arts skills and the ability to freak out his adversaries without even moving. If those things don't make you a super hero, I don't know what does. Actually, he kinda reminds me of another hero... Big money... Cool gadgets... A simple catch phrase...
"I am Iron Man."
Yep, Iron Man. Marvel's Batman. Only, this guy goes way beyond the belt and makes a full body techno suit to take out the bad guys. And I just love his ‘I don't give a shit' attitude when he is out of the suit. Put it all together and you get the coolest techno hero this side of Robo-Cop.
"Don't get me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."
"HULK SMASH!"
This Jolly Green Giant has some real anger issues. I guess I would to if I was in some freaky accident that caused me to have to buy a new shirt every time I lost my temper. Hulk is a real badass to me because he doesn't take shit from anyone. If he doesn't keep his anger in check, he really beats the shit out of whoever got him pissed. I also love the fact that his alter ego is a science geek. He must have gotten his ass kicked by many a childhood bully. So remember, kids: If you beat the crap out of some geeky science nerd and he suddenly has bright green eyes, you better get your ass out of there before you here the words "HULK SMASH!"
We could talk for the next week and a half about all the cool super hero catch phrases and the heroes that come with them. But these are just some of my favorites. We should really give props (Props? Did I just say ‘props?' Have I suddenly come down with a case of 90s Fever?) to the great creators of all these super heroes. Thank you whoever you are that work in DC and Marvel for all the entertainment you've given us over the years. Also big thanks for the great catch phrases that none of us have ever been able to get out of our minds.
Now, if you can excuse me, I have a flight to catch.
UP UP AND AWAY!!!
I always use "Holy cheeseballs, Batman!" whenever I wanna be random.
