Just a brief blog today. I'm a bit spent after my Wanted article, and address my first bit of hate mail. (although I have that funny feeling I'll be fighting more people off on today's topic)

Nostalgia Critic and the Angry Video Game Nerd go to war

Just when you thought it was safe to log in to your computer... The Angry Video Game Nerd finally throws in a few strikes of his own to our dear Nostalgia Critic.

Now, I have to say I'm a Nostalgia Critic fan. With all due credit to the Angry Video Game Nerd, he makes me laugh on a much more consistent basis simply because I'm more familar with the material than video games. I was never a big video games guy (that said, I'm unbeatable on Crash Team Racing), but I am a massive film fan (as you might have guessed from someone whose username is 'Film Brain'). Thus some of the jokes and references are lost entirely on me. That said, I will say that there is the odd moment where the Nerd makes me laugh, most recently the Klingon fight from yesterday's Star Trek episode. But when it comes to brightening my day, the Nostalgia Critic wins hands down.

However, this is an unfair comparison. Its like comparing fine cuisine to fast food. Both have their positives and negatives, but when it comes to satisfying your hunger, both do the job. What you prefer is down to personal preference. Whether you prefer the Nostalgia Critic's more gag-based style or Angry Video Game Nerd's more analytical style, we should all realize that these are both very talented performers and we should be honoured to have them entertain us.

I do think, however that AVGN "Nazis" (I prefer the term "extremists", but maybe that's my history studies coming through) are way out of line when they start insulting other performers who aren't the Angry Video Game Nerd. When the guy you're "supporting" is ashamed of you, maybe you should consider asking yourself a few questions. I can understand the venom at obvious plagarist Irate Gamer (I'm reminded of the saying "plagarism is the sincirest form of flattery"), but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Not everyone is ripping off the Nerd. The fact that the Nerd has to constantly make sure his fans know his video is satirical shows how much of a nusicance these fans are. Nostalgia Critic had the luxury of knowing his fans would see the satire via his exaggerated persona, which unfortunately the Angry Video Game Nerd does not. It also shows the real reason behind his response: to silence the extreme fans.

Still, I hope the fued continues. As one man said... FIGHT! *

UPDATE: You know, the Angry Video Game Nerd's fans have surprised me even with their stupidity yesterday. In case you don't know, the Angry Video Game Nerd's fans have taken down all the reviews on YouTube. I'm dead serious about this. This is unacceptable behaviour. Its akin to McDonalds customers going out and torching Burger King after finishing their Big Macs. So it appears the reason the Nerd actually created the video has gone completely over the heads of his fans. That is a real shame. Apparently, the reason for the videos deletion is because "a producer of Pokemon" objected to his video. I use quotation marks because apparently what really happened was someone impersonated a producer. That's right - the Angry Video Game Nerd's fans have even gone to extent of fraud. And because YouTube appears to be led by a bunch of wusses who don't check these things, or copyright exceptions for that matter, the videos were deleted. While I am aware that not all of the Nerd's fans are like this, the fact that this (I'm judging quite large) minority, that doesn't even know the meaning of the word "satire", are doing this is ruining everyones enjoyment. The Nerd's video promoted the Nostalgia Critic (hi, the 2000 new visitors!), not incited hate against him. Oh, and for any of these extremists are reading this blog...

I can see why the AVGN wouldn't want to reply, as his idiotic fans take everything he says so seriously, and were even stupid enough to think that Nostalgia Critic was being serious. However I feel that the way he replied to this was appropriate, as not only does he keep the joke running, but also puts the fans in their places.

I honestly don't understand why AVGN nazis think badgering other reviewers and falsly accusing them of plagerism in "defending" the nerd. It's stupid, and even James Rolfe hates them.

I totally agree with every point you said, and I hope that the "fued" continues, because it keeps getting funnier, especially now the Angry Video Game Nerd has responded! Can't wait to see what ThatGuy does next. smilies/wink.gif

My prayers have been finally answered.

First, Obama wins the first presidential race and then AVGN responds.

I love these WWF vs. RAW style fueds. They're fake, but more humerous than the real ones.

As for the AVGN nazi's, thats just how most nerdy gamers are. agnst teenagers or basement-dwellers. A very very small number of them are a bit smart thought. Still feel sorry for most of those delusional kids.

However, I still don't understand how that simple video got over 9000 (not the meme. The real number) views and over 50 pages of comment. Are the "nazi"s that sadistic?

I think the extreme reaction from AVGN fans is a good thing. It's fuel to the fire that is this feud.

NO ONE beats the Nostalgia Critic. I'm a fan of both of them, but the AVGN fans have gone to far now. I considering removing my subscription to the AVGN. Any advice?

They removed his videos? Oh my god, this time they have gone too far. For me this is the last straw. If I ever meet one of these stupid fucks I will give them a piece of my mind. It's pathetic as hell, and I can't believe that even The Nerd himself can't keep them under control. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP. There needs to be a crackdown on this, and Youtube need to stop being such a bunch of pussies and kissing the feet of anyone remotely assosiated with any lawyers of sort.

Its not his fault that the AVGN cant keep ALL his fans under controll, I think he thought the video would knock some sense into the AVGN Nazi's but that didnt work.The point is he tried to keep it maintained by adding the satirical stuff.

This has gone too far. If they don't like NC, they shouldn't watch him, not make it so no one can watch him. Here's a message to every fan of the AVGN who participated in that.

By doing this, you have not only disgraced yourselves, but discraced the name of the AVGN fan. Now everyone'll think the Nerd got the NC accounts banned, and this'll start an all out war. Please...don't drive this too far, all right?

Thats my problem too. These guys are funny at what they do and James even SAYS in his video that its satire and people still don't listen. People like that just want an excuse to argue over the net. I'm just glad that guy has this site because its a place where more hits is good and assholes who spam can just be banned.

I think what makes AVGN fans so hostile is because there are many other game reviewers on Youtube who rip off the AVGN and there are others who trash the AVGN and insist their game reviews are better. Nerd fans are used to fighting back with whiney comments and stupid comparisons. I agree Nerd fans have no place trashing the Critic, but remember the Nerd has competition on YouTube. The NC has some competition but there is hardly anyone who is even close to the Critic's hilarious movie reviews.
