Usually, I don't get this annoyed. Usually, I pass it over. For some reason though, this form of "art" has taken over on DeviantArt, and I just can't take it anymore. Those people... Those horribly made costumes... except Sailor Bubba, he's cool.
If you don't know what I am talking about, it's Cosplay.
Cosplay is really starting to get on my nerves. I can't browse the dang site anymore without at least one picture popping up, containing an awkward pose by some person in a costume! Do these people really think this is art? I have a Michael Myer's mask (Halloween movies), and if I were take a picture of myself wearing it, holding a knife, standing in a dark room, and post it on DeviantArt; I bet you one US dollar that I would get laughed at.
Anime Cosplay is really getting out of hand on that site. It's one thing to do it if you're at a convention, and you're having fun, that's understandable. It's another thing to do it to be popular on a website that was meant for art.
And yes, I understand photography is a form of art. My question to you is have you seen some of the cosplayers there? A very rare few can pull it off. I will give a few people credit, the stuff they do does look good. My complaint is more on the taking a picture with a generic digital camera, posing with your friends in costumes you made for $10, and calling that art? Use Photobucket and share the pictures with your friends. I don't need to see that on DeviantArt!
The best way to show you this is through example. Search Cosplay on DeviantArt.com. This is what you will get under the "Popular"setting.
Good Cosplay

See how this one is good? The actor here got into his character, looks like the character he is portraying (Ishida from Bleach) and the photographer knows what he/she is doing. This is a fine example of a good cosplayer.
Bad Example:

If you can't get it, this is Timmy, Cosmo and Wanda from the Fairly Odd Parents, a NickToon. First off... I think they all are female, while two of the characters being played are male. Secondly, what in the world are they doing? Finally, the one in the middle doesn't look like she even wants to be there!
I'm sorry Cosplay community, but you need to tone it down. I know there is no way one small blog post can control you guys, but Cosplay is losing it's luster.
Final point, if you can pull it off decently, then go for it. There are some very good Cosplayers out there. But for those who do it like my bad example, just please stop. You may be getting views and popularity on a website, but for crying out loud, you are becoming the standard for what Cosplay is, and it's not that high.
A small rant on DeviantArt.com & Cosplay
