Yo,

In a fit of this odd sensation called emotion I have completed a reactory rant to an announcement made by Square-Enix, which can be found here:

http://www.square-enix.com/jp/

Decoded simply for the quick reader, this means that the much beloved RPG Chrono Trigger will be coming to the DS.

As this is a rant of immediate-reaction colours, please note that I may have slipped in my prideful abuse of fluffy, elaborate sentences with very big words, as the nature of the piece demanded less attention to flair.

I have, however, updated the text with brackets, giving more information on topics non-gamers may not know too much about, in order to keep the interest. These updates can be found as (in parenthesises) portions of text.

*****

Allow me to broadcast my fanboy colours for a brief moment and rant here.

As a (much hated) owner of the PSP (Playstation Portable), I had saved up money, stupidly spent it on snacks, cried, and begged for one as a gift on Christmas in part hoping that Square's (known formally as Square-Enix, a Japanese development company famous for its "Final Fantasy" library) relationship with Sony (makers of both the PSP and Playstation 3 game consoles) would continue to be relatively exclusive, as it has been since their controversial move away from Nintendo (game development company famous for its "Mario", "Legend of Zelda", and "Metroid" series) in the beginnings of Final Fantasy VII's development (a controversial move in the games industry around 1995-96, due to the nature of Nintendo's new system running on catridges, rather than the more powerful new CD-based technology.) Alas I was wrong.

Its as if Infinite Undiscovery (a non-Final Fantasy Role-Playing Game by Square) being tied solely to the Xbox 360 (Microsoft's home console, second generation from the Xbox) wasn't enough to make my Playstation console owning ass feel lanced. With the release of both FF IV and now Chrono Trigger seeing only DS (Nintendo's handheld device) releases, it makes me, for the first brief moment in time, wish for a Nintendo console. I understand the reason for Square's decision, being that the DS audience is larger, but why keep it exclusive? Square's releases to Nintendo consoles had been bare for quite a few years, with the only offerings to the Gamecube (Nintendo's previous home console before the Wii) being the lesser Crystal Chronicles and the GBA getting a few re-releases of old Fantasies that were better in their Playstation reinteration...and now it seems like the PSP is getting stiffed. Now, don't assume me to be a uninformed whiner here: I know we (the PSP crowd) are getting Dissida (a Final Fantasy based fighting game), Birth by Sleep (a Kingdom Hearts prequel), and already have Fantasy I, II, Crisis Core (a prequel to FF VII), and FF Tactics: War of the Lions (a remake of the original tactical adventure on the Playstation 1) available to us, but I would gladly make all those titles open for DS release as well if it meant a less inane and erratic release schedule. The problem with making those titles available to the DS is that they were built to utilize the PSP system, which is much more technically advanced (more than graphics-wise) and would require much more than just a code-port to get them to the DS, which would result in a downgraded final game. I have not the money nor the desire to purchase a DS, even solely for this game, as the majority of the DS library can be evenly compared to the Wii's, meaning 90% pure shlock shovelware (a phrase which here means: really crappy games.) I know that pirated versions of these games will soon be available after their release, with emulators, torrents, and cracks allowing me to play them on the better system, but Square-Enix's games are the few that I always attempt to purchase wholesale, to support their development. I am left with no solid final point in this case, as the reasons for these releases are known and understandable, its just me way of throwing the proverbial fist into the air at the cosmic unfairness of it all.

Wait…you have a PSP and yet you’re complaining that the DS’s library is 90% crap……cmz…heh…(struggling to keep a straight face.) Though I will say that the DS and Wii have perhaps too many casual games (a lot of which aren’t good casual games anyway) they also have plenty of fun hardcore games as well (enough for me anyway.) Also, other consoles have 90% “hardcore” M rated games (many of which are very similar to each other,) and casual gamers need something to play, too. If you really look at the whole picture, none of the consoles has a good ratio of games. I think the closest might be the Nintendo 64 or the Playstation One. Everyone is entitled to their opinion though, and I think a good game for PSP would definitely not be a bad thing (PSP owners need to use their gaming platform for at least some gaming.)
The DS and PSP are so different that making a Chrono Trigger for each would be like making two different games entirely. They would need to use one studio for each game.
It's no real surprise they are making it for DS, because they have already been making remakes of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games.
Face it. It isn't Nintendo or Microsoft's fault gaming companies are turning to other platforms. If you really want them to make games for your platform try to rally support. If the company is seeing a lot of people crying for the game on that system they would be more willing to make a game for that system.
In my personal opinion I think it's great the game is coming to DS. I've never had a chance to experience what some people call the greatest RPG of all time, and the DS needs more companies to take the platform seriously and make hard core games for it. I'm dieing for a great FPS. smilies/sad.gif
