Hey, I'm Scotsperson and I'm a wee bit of a lurker around the site, but I've decided to come out of the shadows, and try my hand at writing reviews once more. If you wish to see eviews for other games I've done, check out http://palaeontologicalinsanity.wordpress.com/. For my return to the world of writing reviews, I'm taking a look at a game that was released rather silently, or at least one that was under my radar. I'm talking about the John Woo-esque bloodbath that is WET.
Now, I was going into this blind - no review, no one's opinion, I just bought it alongside another game because it was there, and didn't sound too bad. You play as Rubi Malone, a no-nonsense, emotionless assassin who gives flash backs to good old Uma Thurman in Kill Bill...just less yellow and more impossible hair style. Add in a bit of the Matrix, Mirror's Edge and the aforementioned Mr. Woo, garnished with 70s music and congratulations! You've summed up WET. Sounds like a fun game, right? Sure, for the first couple of levels, but it soon gets to the point where you are doing the same thing over and over with no variation. Shoot some guys, do some crobatic climbing over terrain, use katana to go down zipline, shoot some more guys while blocking off spawn doors, shoot yet more recycle-goons, and voila.
To the game's credit, it has a couple of nice features, like going into bullet time when jumping, wall-running and leaping, and allowing you to shoot two guys at once. One gun is focused on the guy closest to the middle of your screen when you jump, while you aim with the second. If you master this, it makes you feel badass. And helps with the hordes of goons as well. You get bonus points for doing stylish manouvers like shooting two guys while sliding towards a third, then leaping from your slide to rip out his guts with your sword. These points are used to give Rubi new abilities and manouvers, as well as upgrade her weaponry and health. It's a good system, but it means you end up leaping and sliding around every time you see an enemy just to get more points, making the game twice as long, when you can just run up and slash at them with your sword.
The game looks stunning - there's no doubt about it. The locations are incredible, the character design is realistic, and in the case of one of the characters - Tarantula (A blind Albino assassin) - downright creepy. My hat goes of to the developers of the game for not having the heroine dress up like she's going to the beach. The bodies fall down realisticly rather than a pre-made animation that have them lying down on the ground straight while over a cliff. It's the little details that can make or break a game, so I'm glad they paid attention to this. That said, they forgot a major detail...
Now, the point of a manual is to tell you what modes are in the game, and what to do when that mode initiates. WET neglects to tell you ANYWHERE in the game that at points in the game, there is a Rage system, where Rubi goes berserk, the whole screen goes red, black and white, and you have to rack up a chain of kills. The first time this happens, you think to yourself "Holy crap, what's going on?" - the rockers screaming in the bakground do not help, they only make you wanna run. It's a good idea, but the first one has you doing jumps, and it's bloody hard to see where you're meant to go like this. When you figure out what you're meant to do with this mode, and where to go - it's good fun, and was sad when the music ended. The second time it happened? They used the exact same bloody cutscene. That kinda sets the tone for the whole game. Recycled stuff.
In conclusion? It's not a bad game, but it certainly isn't Arkham Asylum by any means. Rent it, rather than buy it - you'll beat it in a day.
