I’m sorry to say this, but this episode was pretty boring.
I enjoyed your last episode (since you made fun of crappy AMVs).
But this episode had no comedic value whatsoever.
Instead of focusing just on AMVs, why don’t you review bad anime shows or movies?

It might be amusing if you compare a really bad one to an awesome one.

Anyway, I didn't know people actually made good AMVs. O: I'm not too into them myself, but my friend's always watching them on youtube. I'll have to tell her about your reviews. smilies/smiley.gif

written by storage and disposal , August 03, 2008
I thought your first AMV video was pretty funny. I admire the work this guy put into it, but it isn't really equal great art to me. Personally, if someone really did spend years making an AMV, I would of it as a complete waste of time.

That was great. Could we make requests for AMVs you can recommend (if you feel they're worth it)?

If so, I'd like to request you to review anything by Tyler_yj. Most notably 'Jihaku' which is absolutely terrific and it contains 117 anime! Other notable mentions is 'Beautiful Lie' (Paranoia Agent) & 'Tsumibito No Kashou' (Full Metal Alchemist).

Much obliged, I hope. smilies/grin.gif

Comedic Value
written by SuperDrops , August 03, 2008
Normally I only lurk and don't comment, but here I felt that a comment was in order.

Now some people have complained about the lack of comedic value. I can understand that they would expect some, since most other videos on this site have, but I honestly don't think that the purpose of this episode or even show is found in comedy. It's here to showcase people that have talent and have done great work and art, even if its only in the opinion of the DudeInSuede.

Regarding the presented AMV, I loved it. I did not recognise most of the anime included because I'm from Germany and we are still a little backwater in the anime department, but sure enough I recognised some. The thing that made this a good AMV to me is this: It made me want to see all of the animes that were included in the video. It conveyed a great and powerful affection that the creators must've held for those shows, and while some may think that is shieldish or a waste of time I salute people who can still enjoy the little things.

Regarding the future of "AMV Heaven". I say stay on course, DudeInSuede. The little joke was great and properly placed, just the right amount. This is not about comedy, not about you, but about the art and talent of others, and you have taken the honorable task of bringing it to the masses. Kudos.

written by catoblepa , August 03, 2008
...you know, this is Nostalgia Critic's home: it's good to see you have your own style, but we come here to see really BAD movies (or bad anime) and have a few laughs. That doesn't mean we can't watch a positive review now and then (James Rolfe reviewed Super Mario 3, the Critic praised many series in his Top 11, even the Spoony wrote about his favorite fantasy movie, Conan) but it should be an exception: I don't know if we're interested in a full series of nice stuff... it'd be quite boring IMHO (well, I find many AMVs boring, even the good ones. *COUGH*wasteoftime*COUGH*). You should really make an AMV Hell and destroy those horrible movies that get lots of views in Youtube, now that'd be great.

I have to disagree with most comments here that say this video is out of place. I personally enjoy using this site as medium to promote both anime and AMVs, but I would have a legitimate complaint that this video didn't seem as well crafted as your previous. There were moments of stuttering here and there, and it lacked the every charming flare your other videos had. I've found your greatest strength in prior movies was with your words and delivering almost a whimsical property to titles when you speak of them, but I found little of that here. Regardless I can't say I didn't enjoy the video, though anyone who's watched AMVs before has bound to have seen this film at least once. Good work my friend, and keep it up.

Why does so many ppl complain about the video not being comedic enough? Does it HAVE to be to be watchable/entertaining? I don't think so. My only complain is that the video was a bit short. I would've prefer seeing many amvs being showcase rather than just one. Oh and, I think it would be nice if you could pick some of your viewers suggested amvs. I remember in your last video, many people (myself included) posted a bunch of links to some pretty awesome amvs.

REALLY one of the greatest. Not only does it have TONS of anime characters in it, but the music is fairly deep and meaningful. "Never give up, never give in. Won't stop believing 'cause I'm gonna win" That practically describes the motivation of half the anime world. It's almost not a tribute, but a summary of anime entirely. A good choice for the first AMV heaven. In any case, a good start. I look forward to Episode 2.

Seinen in my Shonen
written by MrRube , August 03, 2008
AMVs don't really do anything for me, but I was a little amused at this; Why was Guts in something that says Shonen in the title. Berserk is seinen...Seinen for Christ's sake. People get their shit wrecked with all sorts of blood sprays, decapitations, and disembowelment. Not only that but there is a very prominent rape scene. While the anime is tame compared to the manga, in either form Berserk isn't meant for kids/young teenagers.

Question: Will there be a standard Animenia video this week?

Video is gorgeous, although I feel you should have saved it for last. Also, I feel you put more stock into lip-synching and effects than into synching the clips well with the music, both in relevance, and in rhythm. Don't get me wrong, this video does well with relevance, and is wonderfully made, but most of it is lip-synching, which some may find boring.

There's a very simple solution to this problem.

Just, don't watch his videos. ThatGuy along with the other people who personally run this site, are the ones that choose who's videos get shown. They probably wanted to throw in some variety. It brings in more users. Just having typical NC/TGWTG comedy can alienate an audience. Not everyone goes searching for that kind of humor. Adverising some tame, nice reviewing through other movie makers can bring in a wider demographic. And I personally like it. I'm not a huge fan of AMV's either, but it's not something that's commonly reviewed or given attention.

I'm sure that in the future, TGITS will review bad anime. It's out there. He might be working on something right now and just wants to surprise us. But for right now, he's like the calm, optimistic brother of the NC.

Where to start?
written by Shinjischneider , August 04, 2008
My first Post so i better think of what I'm going to write down here...

Well first of all I think i'll mention some facts about Istiv Studios.

Istiv won several Awards with this Clip and even made another one, which was also very good. (more infos here http://www.animemusicvideos.or...r_id=27839)
When i first saw the Movie i thought... "ok he put a lot of work into it... but maybe it's just flashy but without real... well..content" (to be honest, a lot of AMV-Makers try to hide their Lack of ideas and skills behind flashy special effects).
But about Istiv... he's good. He did a great Job and shows what's the difference between a good AMV and a great AMV. (I consider some of mine as not bad/good while this guy is ingenious).

Now to: AMV Heaven....

Don't get me wrong. But the Name AMV-Heaven pretty much is a rip-off of AMV-Hell. But while AMV-Hell used to show a lot of AMVs you just show us one... wait, you don't even show it. You just say. "Yes this one is good because it has good lip-sync and was done great..."
For an AMV-Heaven i'd suggest you to show more Clips and show longer scenes of them. You don't have to show the whole Clips but at leaste 20 seconds of them in a row (maybe of the best part) or 1 Minute while making comments about the effects.

What i try to say is.... show us WHY you think those AMVs are great, try to look more like someone who knows what he's talking about, instead of just another Nerd telling me "woohooo look at that, it's so great." (sorry about the harsh comment, i tend to REALLY exaggerate sometimes).

And of course like any other nerd here too i'll leave you a link to my own AMVs so you can make fun of them in return. (I especially suggest the AMV Boom... it was my first wor... you can't actually call it work... i didn't really do something with it)
http://www.youtube.com/Shinjischneider

And last but not least....

don't let yourself down because of harsh comments, but think about your name. You're on the Homepage of "THAT GUY" and call yourself "THAT GUY" too. So you'll always have to live up to the expectations of thatguywiththeglasses fans... change your name and stay unique, otherwise you might just look like a rip-off and I think that would be a waste of talent.

Greets

Shin

Shonen is essentially manga (the Japanese equivelent of a comic. You know, those backward books) or anime directed towards boys. Mostly they are full of action, fighting, and adventure. Dragonball Z is an infamous shonen. You know, lacking on the story but there's things beating the crap out of other things, so it works ya'know? Most of the anime seen in that video are shonen, though I can't qualify them all mostly because I knew maybe 40% of the anime shown.

So yeah, shonen are Japanese comics for males, but the wider generalization is that they're action/adventure series, but that's not absolute.

Wiz-bag effects do not a great AMV make
written by Lord Griffin , August 07, 2008
The "best video" that you linked us to was ... good, sure. However, it really only had technical proficiency and obvious time allotment to it's credit. It also WAY overused lip-sincs. After awhile, that's just gets boring. For TRULY good videos, look to the past. If you haven't heard the name "Kevin Caldwell", then I must wonder what business you have reviewing AMVs at all. Kevin is the ONLY profile on amv.org that was aloud to be made by proxy simply because he's one of the "fathers" of AMVs. And his works stand up to the test of time to. I watch Engel several times while I'm making my own AMVs, just to get inspiration.

Also a quick question: Do you attend AMV screenings and anime conventions? These are the perfect venues to find the best of the best AS they're released. The AMV contest at Sakura-con, for example uses the Washington State Convention Center's largest room and still can't fit everybody who wants to watch it. Heck, Sakura-con has a SIDE event that's nothing but 24 hour AMV showings and this year they're being forced to take one of the large main event rooms due to heavy popularity. In other words, if you haven't attended a respectable AMV contest, you might want to check one out.

Maybe then you'll learn what makes a TRULY awesome video. ... And it's not about over using masking and lip sincs either.

After having watched your various reviews, I have a recommendation for you. I now know what kinds of openings you like, what kinds of AMVs you like and I think I have a general idea of your personal tastes. This recommendation is NOT one of my own videos. It's a video that was submitted to Sakura-con's AMV contest under the exhibition category due to do a clerical error. I've spoken with the executives of Sakura-con and have it on good word that this video WOULD have won SEVERAL awards had it been properly submitted. The video makes heavy use of dancing from Lucky Star, Haruhi Suzumia and Oran High. If you have not seen "Attack of the Otaku", then do yourself a favor and follow this link: http://www.animemusicvideos.or...p?v=154127

You should review that one as it is considered by most as the definitive One Piece amv and it rocks. (I like One Piece)

Now I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed of this but barring maybe four or five, I've seen every Anime in that video! I could list em, but I don't wanna crush you guys with a wall-o-text. But seriously that's a great AMV, and I recognised it from the closing credits of AMV Hell, I'd thought that was original but apparently not. It's nice to know where it came from.

For well synced videos that tend to fit themes pretty well I'd suggest looking at Sierra Lorna and her sister Silver Moon's videos on animemusicvideos.org, and one of the best videos I've seen is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSJuccHV25c which can also be downloaded at animemusicvideos.org.

Er, you guys did hear *why* he didn't show more of the AMV, right? He stated it very clearly: It's based on feedback from the previous vid he did.

About the AMV; thanks for showing the way to it. Great song and great editing. ^_^

That was insanely awesome. Any chance of getting some kind of a list from you on which animes you'd suggest for people to watch? I've seen quite a few but I kinda "dropped" from the anime-scene for a good while so I got no idea of what good new ones they've managed to make.

Would also like suggestions from other Anime-watchers and wouldn't mind some oldies but goldies either.
