It's funny, whenever I would search for one of Linkin Park's actual music videos on YouTube, I'd get like 50,000,000 AMV's. So yeah, I feel your pain lol.

Nice vid, but was the Audio and Video out of sync, or is it just me and my crappy computer. That was truly a nice AMV and I hope to see more of them. I have to confess of doing some low grade AMVs too in my early anime days, before I really started to follow them. Therefore I can also understand those crappy ass Linkin Park AMVs. I think its because Linkin Park is/was so popular and no one wants to show individuality in fear of being laughed at. Little effort needed and something to do while you waited for the next episode. If only I had been told they were awful from the start, I wouldnt have polluted the internet with them... Oh wait. Yes I would have.

That AMV was spectacular (I think I'm going to start watching my RahXephon DVD's again)

I loved your review. I have personally seen that DBZ one (sorry smilies/grin.gif) but I turned it off about a minute into it cause it was getting pretty lame.

Can't wait to see more of your awesome vids. Your #1 mega-fan signing off.

I remember Picasso suggesting to beginning art students that they copy the works of the great masters before progressing towards their own works of art, saying, "...It is when you make mistakes that the work becomes your own." [SIC]

The AMV "culture", if you will, may seem like a group of dullards who have no life beyond their own geekiness, but the ability to render their own impressions and even ideals of what the show means to them so beautifully in a music video with pre-rendered cutscenes is sheer brilliance. The ability to take experiences within your life from any of the media and make it your own is a wonder; I do it with my origami all the time.

I must applaud you. Recently I mentioned how hard pressed I was to finding an AMV without some form of Linkin Park being involved and my friends dismissed me like I was crazy. I love AMVs (though as a fight junkie they usually tend to have VS in the title), and it's great to see respect being given to those that are actually good. For every ten Naruto/Sasuke Numb videos there's bound to be at least one good display of the culture out there, and I applaud you again for taking the time out to search them out. Mind you without knowing the subject material I'm left to guess the emotions behind such a video, but alas that's what comes as a result when your tastes are limited to a main character with a "finishing attack". So it shall be.

In summary, fantastic video my friend. I enjoy looking to these videos just as much as That Guy's (original?) own. Keep up the good work... and please think up a good closer. Ted Turner will grasp vengeance upon you.

Euphoria was a perfect choice for showcasing AMVs as it was the defining AMV that set the standard for all that was to come. Even now, 5 years later, it is still the highest overall rated video on www.animemusicvideos.org and enjoyable to a wide range of audiences.

For those interested in sifting through the reams of crap for gems, allow me to name drop some editors:
Koopiskeva (Euphoria editor)
Nostromo
Pwolf
Kevin Caldwell (Pre-Euphoria era editor)
JCD
VicBond007
Chiikaboom

This is my first comment on the site btw. Mr. Suede, its amazing how much you can talk about Anime and not come off sounding pretentious as hell, which often happens with Anime reviewers and commentators.

DBZ equals good?
written by lupinthebastard , July 30, 2008
Gotta agree with you, Dude, most AMVs seem like somebody hit the play/record button on their DVD and CD players at the "right" moment and thought their "creation" was KICKASS.

The Euphoria video was fantastic but the best AMV I ever witnessed was a DBZ video. I know, SHOCKING, but hear me out. They took some quasi-high quality footage from DBZ and edited it to a song from the Fight Club soundtrack by the Dust Brothers. The song was "This is Your Life" and it contained Tyler Durden's full "all singing, all dancing crap of the world" speech over the Dust Brothers electronica. It had a music video directed by David Fincher which served as inspiration for this "This is DBZ Life" video. The original can be found on the Fight Club DVD, the AMV may be a little harder to track down. Try www.animemusicvideos.org and search throughly.

written by Bennett the Sage , July 30, 2008
I may seem like the bad guy for pointing this out, but you shouldn't have put that AMV at the end of your video. That's someone else's work, which you did nothing with but just stuck it right there at the end. And since it's on Revver, your getting paid for it. If you're going to do crap like that, then put it on Youtube or somewhere else, but getting paid for someone else's work is, to put it bluntly, despicable.

My favorite AMV.
written by Daikun , July 30, 2008
My favorite AMV is called The AniMix Project. It's an hour-long AMV using music from my favorite megamix of all dance, Deep Dance Vol. 50 by DJ Deep. The video uses clips from over 100 different anime series, a crapload of contributors, and masterful editing.

Here's the official website: http://www.bde.enseeiht.fr/clubs/japanim/animix

Unfortunately, the direct link doesn't work anymore. You'll have to try one of the listed Torrent sites, or download it from AnimeMusicVideos.org (free registration required).

The file size is HUGE, but it's worth the wait.

So, I feel like I should provide some constructive criticism, even though I'm new here, please take it as such.

To be honest, though I largely agree with your points, I'm not really sure I liked this video. Maybe it was a time constraint, but I don't think your point was made too well and I think I narrowed it down to two problems.

1). That you spent entirely too much time explaining what an Anime Music Video was. I think it's pretty simple to understand, yet four minutes in and you're still more or less explaining the history behind them. Unnecessary and a little pedantic.

2). The inclusion of an ENTIRE Music video at the end. This is wasteful. Link it to us, or referance it some other way.

I would have really preferred if you gave us a few more clips of examples, both positive and negative. You show us one bad anime music video (DBZ) and one supposedly good one (Raxpheon), but don't give us any of the in-betweens. What about the really good comedy ones? What about the really bad ones with the subtitles stil in the image? The needless death metal gore ones?

You spent so much time in those two places you ended up providing a less than clear picture, and I really think you should expand a little bit because frankly, the commentary itself was pretty spot on and funnny, but there was just so little of it.

I agree with you on how theres tons on trashy AMVs on Youtube, not only do idiots with no taste like them, but their own ceators think they made the best video ever. (I'm gulity of maning such AMVs, but at least I know they are garbage compared to some of my better ones) I also agree with the Linkin Park AMV overkill. However, there are some Linkin Park AMVs ive seen that are actually good! For example, this fantastic AMV for Code Geass I found: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3-bi3X_vLY

While on the topic of AMVs, I have some great ones I recommend, alot of them are on my Youtube favorites list (although I will admit some are pretty bad). I suggest "The Race", "Knights of Fate", "Come on Sailor Moon", "Shattered Dreams", "Shine", "Roy the Impaler", "She's Just Oblivious", "Waka Laka For Osaka"...I would suggest more, but thats enough for now.

Thank you for summing up my exact thoughts. As a would-be AMV creator myself, I find it ridiculously annoying to release a formidable piece that only gets some few thousand hits, while someone else makes a festering shitbomb of substandard editing, grainy footage and overused song that automagically scores several tens of thousands of views and praising comments from their "enlightened" audience just because the creator wanted to make yet another DBZ/Naruto/One Piece vid. Really hits me nerve.

Please, don't flame me. I'm sensitive.

Good work on this video Dude, still not quite up to the standard of That Guy I think but in just a few video's your definitely improving and overall it's a good video. Good editing, humour, well argued points. Only two points I'd critique you on.

1) Some of your reactions seem held back a little, for example the bit where you say "stop stop" with the crawling in my skin vid seems like your holding back a bit.

2) It's noticeable at some points where you appear to keep looking just below the camera, presumably towards your auto cue or whatever you are using.

Anyway other than that I thought it was great! As a longtime casual anime fan who has only just started delving deeper into the medium I find it very interesting and funny and I'm looking forward to your AMV Heaven vids. Just a suggestion but maybe you could also do video's reviewing (are perhaps 'examining' would be a better word) classic / older anime. Kind of like Nostalgia Critic if a comparison needs to be made, although at this point it's getting less and less necessary smilies/wink.gif

Do the amv creators pay the production company of the anime for the rights to use their intellectual property? what about the music rights? If all amv creators were legit, there would be no Beatles Amvs.

I would get paid the same for a 6 min vid than a 10 min vid, and I will give full credit and the location to watch or download it in future. I don't get any extra money for the extra length, and if I gave just a link and nothing else, the same amount of people would watch it, but some might not be bothered to check it out. so I'm giving the creators more publicity and more exposure, which is really all a true amv creator wants.

Calling out most of AMV's for not only being poorly edited (which most are) but almost going to the point of saying the makers of AMV have little lives to contend with. You take a razor line stance and I commend you for it. You bring up many valid points and I look forward to future AMV reviews. My question though is will you be showing the best of AMV's that were made right now? Or would you be willing to find the fine gems that were made during the P2P era?

I saw the AMV when it first came out in 2003. It was mind blowing then and still is. I believe the guy won an award for it. Being from the pre-Youtube generation, I don't watch Amv's on it. I (like the fool that I am) Actully paid to see AMV's when they first came out from AMV.com. No shit! The sight has been up for years. Us "First generation" Anime otakus had to go through alot just to get a copy, of a copy, of a copy of any Anime in the states. Now these kids just download it off the internet. My god I feel old. (I'm only 30). But I am glad that there is someone out there that is willing to weed through all the crappy videos to show us the really good one. So in parting I say, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! It's about fucking time. I can't wait till the next show.

Do AMV creators get permission from their respective clients? About 99.99 %, no. But, again, they're not getting paid for it. And, if you wanted people to see the AMV, why couldn't you just embed the video under yours? People would be more likely to click on that than on a link. I apologize if it seems I'm being overtly harsh, but I feel strongly about content abuse on Revver.

Great vid. I liked the part at the beginning with all the eyes. I really don't get AMV's. Aren't the opennings to most anime already AMV's anyways? But still, I agree that when done well, it can be an interesting form of expression.
I also want to know, what anime is that AMV at the end from? Is it RahXephon? Isn't that the one where Japan disappears, and when they find it, it's like on Mars or something? And there are aliens that are like, "You red blooded humans stole our blue-skyed world, so now we blue blooded aliens are taking it back!" Or something like that. Like most anime, it was pretty weird, but I don't remember it too well, and only saw a couple of episodes.
This is pretty off-topic, but does anyone know what happened to Josh Olsen adapting Monster into a movie? I think that manga would translate great to film... if they don't screw it up. Olsen also adapted A History of Violence, as well, so I'm not too worried about that. But what's the stasis on it? It's supposedly been in development for a couple of years, but nothing's been released about it since it was announced back in 2005.

You know what manga/anime would NOT translate well to western film, though? Akira, Astro boy, Dragonball Z and I can't even concieve of the horror that would be James Cameron (of Titanic fame) making a movie adaption of GUNM, in 3-D!!!1 Wait, what's that, you say all four of such productions are slated for future release? How lovely... *barfs*

AMV Suggestion
written by DRCEQ , July 30, 2008
You're looking for the Best of the Best for AMV videos? I ask you, no... I BEG you to check out "GitSP".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mU5LVBNkZU

This is what you get when you combine Ghost in the Shell, an anime which in itself is a visual masterpiece that combines high budget animation and stunning CGI, with video programming that perfectly overlays scenes upon each other, masterful transitions, and newly added special effects.

Youtube's video quality doesn't do justice to the actual video which can be found at Animemusicvideos.org.

I applaude the man who made it, and hope to see more from him.

An AMV maker's comment
written by The_Video_Editor , July 30, 2008
I'm an AMV maker/editor too. I totally agree with the Dude In The Suede. smilies/smiley.gif It's good to see a people who understand whats the difference between a good and a bad AMV. I usually make a single video about a month or two (hard working, 9-10 hours per day), so it's very hard to do a good one, and when I see a single shit what made within 5 minutes, and people love it... it's so baaad. smilies/tongue.gif

Bieng someone who is picky to say the least about the amvs he feels are good enough to even waste a comment on I think these 2 may be really appealing 2 people as they have intrigued me... But hell who am I right? Anyway here they r

Ok if its a funny amv u wanna see then i would probably check out this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p7EONScLrHg. This is a truly funny cowboy bebop one which i personally find has a little bit of the shows funky
smilies/wink.gif style

But if its something more intresting and deep ur lookin 4 then may i suggest this link: I think it matches the worldly tone of Cowboy bebop suprisingly well and the mood felt at the at the end of the anime, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ5WA-tefxk

Just my opinions though and I REALLY like Cowboy Bebop smilies/grin.gif

Where did you get that creepy Amy Rose cosply pic? It should be on failblog.org. And that was possibly the best AMV I've ever seen, though I've seen a poignant Spirited Away AMV that was really good.

and, again, if I gave them the extra money that I get for padding the video, they'd get zero dollars! I'm paid by how many hits the videos get, not how long they are. That being said, I'll see if I can embed it below the intro, as that does seem like a less messy solution.

some great AMVs
written by Masao , July 30, 2008
I have to completely agree with you, i watch AMVs with Linkin Park songs very seldom. Here are 2 AMVs you should check out, because they are great (at least i think so smilies/wink.gif ):

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/13652.html?rdir=1&

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/190071.html

I know there are Hellsing clips in the second one, but they are all from the OVAs , which were WAY better than the original series, so dont let that scare you smilies/wink.gif

It's True....
written by ChronicNeo , July 30, 2008
Yes even I, have created AMVs on youtube under the same account name as here. They really aren't that great except like one or two that I'm really proud of.

Secondly, dude. Did you know there is a whole website dedicated to this?
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/

Most of the videos here are professional enough to be on TV.
There is one series I am in love with called DOL or Darkness over light. Right now there are only three videos done by a guy going by the name Mike of the Desert. But they are great in both sync and quality.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EzQce6tqC8

That is my best video in my opinion.

Finally.
written by Prime92 , July 30, 2008
I was waiting for someone to do a video about AMV's. I myself do AMV's every once in a while. I tend to take my time to get the video clips matching with the song I'm using; but of course a large majority of AMV's are simply a song put over one clip from one episode of a show. I hate that so much.

As for this video itself. It did have it's funny moments. The "Wholey Fishpaste!!!" had me cracking up for a few minutes. I can't wait to see more; and if you do a greatest/worst AMV's video I would enjoy that very much.

Hah.. I'm really glad to see an anime critic type series coming to this site. And I agree, AMVs can really be an art when done well. I saw a few other classic AMVs in the earlier part of your video.. and I look forward to seeing the list you come up with. Maybe I'll even learn of some great ones I overlooked...

written by Tsuki , July 30, 2008
Okay, sir, you rock. A lot. Seriously. I'm thrilled to see not only "nostalgia" on this site, but current anime critic work. One question, though... you DO plan on doing more than just the "AMV Heaven" vids, right? Your first vid was so good (The Top 11) that I was hoping for more in the vein-- Top 11 Lists, Anime Series Reviews, etc. Maybe a look into the mystery that is cosplaying or BAAAAAAD anime dubs (maybe even a whole bit on Cartoon Network's role in what gets popular in English speaking countries) smilies/smiley.gif But it'll be cool to see some above-the-cut AMVs too.

Last note: a friend of mine was so amused by the use of Linkin Park in DBZ AMVS that she started collecting/downloading EVERY video she could find that paired Trunks (from DBZ) with a Linkin Park song. She got up to about 25 before she got a life and stopped... but by then my soul was killed by proxy.

Anyway, GREAT work! Keep em coming!

written by Gullwhacker , July 31, 2008
Firstly, nice to see this; the anime counterpart to That Guy's usual focus on Western animation and culture of the last couple of decades. Reviewing good AMVs seems like an interesting take, so long as you're able to find interesting ways to introduce us to them.

A few AMVs from my
