District 9

Director: Neil Blomkamp

Starring: Sharlto Copley, Eugene Khumbanyiwa, David James, Marian Hooman, Kenneth Nkosi

District 9 is probably one of the most enjoyable movies of this rather disappointing year. The much-anticipated film boasts a stunning premise: in an alternate 1982, aliens land in Johannesberg. Lost, a million aliens are evacuated from the mothership and into a slum. The government is after their weapons technology, but so far their efforts have been fruitless due to the fact that the weapons have been bio-engineered to work only with alien DNA. Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is sent to lead a government agency into the slum (known as District 9) to tell the inhabitants that they will be evicted and sent to a 'higher quality' area, known as District 10 (which, in reality, is an excuse to move the aliens further away from the human population of Johannesberg). However, what seems like a simple task takes more interesting turn and Wikus becomes South Africa's most wanted man.

What is so engrossing about District 9 (not to be confused with French-fest District 13) is that it is a simple story told well and in a compelling fashion. Although you have seen bits of this before, the partial-documentary element makes the film feel fresh and lures you into the story. However, the doucmentary-element, although much-hyped, is actually one of the weaker elements of the film due to the fact that the conceit is soon abandoned, which does leave viewers more than a little confused when the movie suddenly turns into a third-person Bourne meets Alien Nation. That doesn't make that section of the movie bad, but the shift between the two styles doesn't mesh as one would have hoped (I think the film needed a few more talking heads in its second half to keep the feeling that this is a 'reconstruction' of events).

The film has more than a few points to make about racism and intolerance (which the aliens are a very thinly-veiled excuse for). The aliens are perhaps more compassionate than the human characters are during the events, with the humans frequently taking advantage of them before calling them “prawns”. What this sets up is some interesting characters. Prior to the incident, Wikus seemed incredibly blind or even ignorant of his actions and consequences. A large section of the early part of the film revolves around him walking about the slum, talking to the camera crew, and almost jovially describing the conditions surrounding him. Afterwards, he begins to regain his own humanity in an unusual oxymoron metaphor. You root for this character. And that's amazing when earlier on he so blatantly causes what called be argued as genocide. That you can root for a character after that is amazing writing.

What makes the film also feel so fresh is that it feels authentic. Clearly inspired by the real-life apartheid, the film is full of details that become more plausible the more you look at them. For instance, the belief held by some that consuming alien flesh and blood gives you their strength. Its a detail thats all too chillingly true. The slums look like dirty and disgusting places. The intolerance that people show to the aliens is worryingly close to home on the subject of immigrants. This is aided by the initial documentary feel that presents the attributes and developments in a very matter-of-fact way. Its incredibly convincing and it poses a sharp contrast to plastic blockbusters that have little atmosphere or soul.

The special effects are the perfect sort of special effect: the ones that don't draw attention to themselves. Again, they feel authentic and truly lifelike, which aids the film enormously. I don't think the feel would have worked as nearly as well as it does if the aliens were unconvincing. These aliens have character and soul in addition to their photorealism, and I think the ultimate test of a special effect is whether you notice it or you don't. If you don't notice an effect, then its doing its job. People lambast special effects, but I think CGI far too often gets a bad rap. Yes, there have been truly terrible special effects made by CGI, but there have been many great effects that people turn a blind eye to; take the period detail in Zodiac, most of which was added later in post-production, which no one noticed was a special effect until it was pointed out to them. District 9 is that sort of special effect.

The movie also has a delightful streak of dark, twisted humour running down in, particularly noticable in the alien's addition to cat food and the often outrageously grisly death scenes in the second half. There's more than a little bit of Peter Jackson (who produced the movie) in that streak, particularly some his early, less-mainstream work that he does now. I found myself often laughing with the film at these scenes.

I don't think its perfect, as I've already mentioned. Its not original as some have claimed (it owes a very strong debt to 1986's The Fly remake, for one) but it is an imaginative and piece of storytelling. The other big fault with the movie is the extremely protracted ending that means it becomes Black Hawk Down with aliens and I think it becomes messy at that point. Luckily, I think the final moments of the film do salvage it, but the battle could have stood to be half the length that it is now and become even more effective, rather than eventually numbing as it does now.

Ultimately, District 9 is an extremely enjoyable movie that marks a departure from many of its Hollywood competitors thanks to its authentic style and atmosphere. Although it does make some mis-calculations in places, its strengths tend to rise above them. Perhaps the most exciting thing about the movie is that it clearly signals that Neil Blomkamp is a rising new talent and I really can't wait to see what he does next.

I would like to thank you film brain... alot.

You are a breath of fresh air compared to movie reviewers, You speak about what you really think and go amazingly indepth to the movie. But most importantly you write like a real person, as if it were a conversation between one and other.

I would recomend you check out Neil Blomkamp's "Alive in Joburg" a short movie he made which was the ground works for district 9
you can watch it on YouTube, Also check out his other short movie "Yellow" which looks like for sure it will be his next feture lenght epic.

Good morning, Good evning and Good night, or what ever other time frame you might be in.

I thought the film was good, but it seemed to me that they should have gone one way or the other with it, documentary or traditional Hollywood storytelling. The constant chopping and changing between the two made it seem a bit slipshod. Could have done with less shaky-cam too.

In most other ways it was pretty good though, and this was a solid write-up.

I heard a lot of people complain about the documentary style of the first 15 minutes, but I think it just adds to the film.

It's really there to get the viewer acquainted with 20 or so years of history in the movie's universe within a very short amount of time. For that, I really have to respect how well they accomplished that.

But yeah, great review for a great film.

  • Rigs83  - An actual movie instead of a marketing ploy

I liked G.I. Joe and Transformers when I was a child but I stopped caring about them when I grew up and now they are grossing hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office as hollow shells little more real than they toys they are designed to sell.

I know District 9 is not the most original film ever made but it is certainly the most original film to come to theaters this summer.

I hope it makes enough at the box office to pay for Blomkamp's next film.

  • JesuOtaku  - LOLZ, The Fly...

Yeah, awesome, I'm glad you didn't just fall down and worship this movie like some have, but didn't go the opposite route and say it was a piece of overrated poo, because it's not that at all either.

It's good, aaaaaaalmost great, and had some big hiccups. Amazing how most peeps can't come to that conclusion instead of ALWAYS saying it's either amazing or it's crap. Actually, that response in itself is usually a mark of quality in some way...

  • Herr Wozzeck

Oh dear, I wonder what Chester A. Bum would say to reading this...

Excellent review, FB. I definitely agree with the authentic feeling this movie has, especially when you bring the Nigerian gangsters into the picture. I wasn't annoyed by the protracted ending as much as you were, since it was incredibly well-shot action and I definitely cannot say no to that. Also, because it did have its pockets where very little was going on, and those pockets did give me (at least) an opportunity to catch my breath at those points.

I'm surprised you didn't bring District 9's budget onto the plate, though; supposedy this movie only had a budget of 30 million dollars or some small amount like that. I think that makes D9's CGI that much more incredible, especially since larger-budget movies have tended to have less consistently amazing CGI as of late.

Overall, excellent review. Good to see you took the intelligent approach instead of the approach that detractors and fans have taken for this movie.

As for Blomkamp's latest projects? I'm definitely keeping tabs on him. Jackson definitely knew what he was doing when he produced this movie, I can tell you that much.

Good review Film Brain, and a comment on the Special effects, yeah, they were great, but that's Weta for yeah.

That's the thing about Weta, there are able to make great visual effects for very little money (Return of the King was made on under $100 million). It's incredible. :)

It seems like lately there is only one movie a year that come out that really puts me at the edge of my seat. This year was district 9. Anyone who bitches about it needs only to look at what other crap hollywood has produced.

    Great review film brain.

  • Markwell

Great review. Well balanced and in-depth. I went to see this with some friends yesterday, and it is one of those films you can talk about for ages.

I found it to be a very enjoyable film, although I felt that the second half was dragged out in places. I'm also still not entirely sure what I think of the ending.

I highly recommend that people see this film though; being almost a beacon of light in the swarm of piss-poor films this summer.

  • commanderhavoc

    This movie is so awesome.
Its got moments that made me wanna cry and the music is so different from the African music you usually hear.

  • MrT

This movie is a philosophical masterpiece.

  • trigger12

you, just like james rolf in his video reviews, go about it nice and casually, and voice your opinion, without worrying about jokes or effects. But, unlike james rofl, (The angry video game nerd) Also do it in a somewhat professional way, as well.

i wounder if you'd do a few retro films, like 'Assualt on precint 13' Which was a john carpenter film, made in 1976, with a buget of only 100,000 dollers. wow...... and it had one hell of a soundtrack.

i thank you for being, yet another person to inspire me to write scripts.....for a dream of filmaking i should really stop blabbing about.'

  • ericpowerup

Good review, and I agree wholeheartedly. I love the fact that this film was made for a much lower budget than some of the other crap we've gotten this year.

    GLORY TO THE FILMMAKER!

  • m3gam@n

Well its good to know that there are sensible people on this site. Some other nameless reviewers seem to have lost the ability to know what they are talking about...

  • dr_kramik

This movie is way overrated. The visual and most of direction and acting are awesome, true.

But the plotholes and concept conflicts are so HUGE that they spoil the whole movie imo.

Some events in this shinny blinky rubbish don't make sense whatsoever... i d say am disapointed, they were so close of releasing a masterpiece...

I think D9 deserve a BMB review instead... srsly.

Fanboys should watch it again and be aware of what's going on... which might result in "uh? wut?"

bah, it was entertaining but not as smart as it pretends to be!

  • Film Brain

If you really think this movie is fit for BMB reviewing, then I suggest you take a good long look at the movies I reviewed on that show. You yourself called it "entertaining" - that is certainly not a BMB.

  • Kingpoubar

Like that's stopped you from doing BMB on entertaining movies before.

  • Film Brain

    But not ones I enjoyed.

  • dr_kramik

Indeed, i ve been a bit extreme LOL cause D9 is much a worth watch.

i meant, i have been very impressed the first time i got to watch it, but have been annoyed by a lot of non-sens that occured in the script.

So i went a second time and just concurred that writting was not that great finally...

But yeah, Weta deserves definitelly awards for their smooth job.

  • Odin

Help me god, the world has come to an end, I agree with film brain. I liked this movie.

  • Bauzi

I saw the movie yesterday and it was turely amazing for me. The setting was so new to me that the movie often really got unpredictable. Especially at the first half.

It's not a must see, because I don't think that it's not the cup of tea for many audiences, but everyone who saw the trailer and likes it should watch it for sure.

  • oblivionblademaster

Ah so someone who actually enjoyed the movie. Sadly enough it seems to be that a not many people take this as "their cup of tea" 3/8 people who I told to go see it actually liked the movie. keyword being "liked" and only 1 who would like to have seen it again. People say that there are many plot holes but the same can be said of the Transformers movies and yet I ignore them and just take what is being shown to me. So Film Brain I am glad that your review has a lot of supporting facts and facts to support why you didn't like it. Its the way to go. Continue the good job.

  • gex144  - Oh yeah, take it to the Bum Daddy!

A reviewer who can appreciate the movie for what it is. Glad to see a reviewer on this site who can say this movie is good. Seriously, a movie where people explode and a giant machine shoots a pig at a soldier. What are they expecting, Citizen Kane? This ain't no citizen Kane, it's more like Transformers, Total Recall, and other popcorn flicks, only with more heart and more of a message. I went into the movie thinking this would be a glorified political immigration discussion with some action to thinly veil it. Luckily, the message wasn't as in you face as I expected, and that was for the better.
