Top 15 Game Boy Color Games

Game Boy Color

Alright fine, no more predictions for a while going a combined 1-3 in the opening week of the NFL playoffs I am forced to do another list of my personal top games. Ok now granted when you think Game Boy the color variant is NOT what comes into your head, but I can truly say it is one of the most underrated handhelds out there, since most people skipped it as they went for the Game Boy Advance. However if you were like me and were an adopter of this console you had plenty of reasons to justify your choice.

This little guy was released in 1998, and I can tell you that old brick of an original was good, but it just wasn't quite as nice as my color guy. No more two tone games for me, using some custom boot options you can changed the color tint of your game boy games, play some of them with "enhancements", and even play those exclusive titles...that most people skipped over. Well fear not, I have my list of the top 15 for the platform. Why top 15? Who cares! Here is my personal choices for the platform.

15. Lufia: The Legend Returns

Best rental I ever made. True story, I was in a car trip to Disney World with my mom dad and sister, before leaving I went and rented this game at a local video store. I managed to beat this game on the vacation. Take a 10 hour car ride down, 2 days rained out, and a 10 hour car ride back, and I enjoyed every moment of it. Sure I sucked at RPGs back then, but I can not deny the pure awesome that this game gave me with a great story to boot. Definitely pick this one up if you are going on a long car trip.

14. Micro Machines 1&2 Twin Turbo

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
So you never played this one huh? SHAME ON YOU! This is a great racing games scored more on points rather then finishing first. The goal here is to outrun your opponent on numerous mini tracks and kick them off screen. If you do you earn a point, get 8 points and you win. This is a great port of the game that was ported...almost everywhere at the time, and should be a must play if you like arcade style racers.

13. Bionic Commando: Elite Forces

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Remember Bionic Commando? The game that everyone wanted a sequel for and waited for the HD remake, how did that go? Well this sequel is a great version of it, you get to do everything as a guy or gal as you traverse the scenery collecting items, defeating bosses, and swinging to your hearts content. Again this is another game that virtually no one played and it is a shame since I had a blast playing it, and I think you will too.

12. Spy vs. Spy

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Go on, laugh it up. Sure a game based off of a comic strip in MAD Magazine sounds like a bad idea, but trust me when I tell you this was the shit! Two player competition in a race to find the key item and escape without falling into traps or dieing is something that is awesome. Highly recommended and if you find someone else with this game, the 2 player mode makes this game an instant classic in my book.

11. Dragon Warrior I & II

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Sure you might have played the original port of the game, but this remake takes that an improves upon it. Cleaning up some bugs, adding cut scenes, tightening up the story all in an effort of telling you that this game kicks ass. Not for the casual RPG fan since these games will kick your ass but none the less well worth your time and effort if you want a good RPG on the go.

10. Tetris DX

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Yes it is number 10 on my list, surprised? What I consider THE Tetris game to own prior to Tetris DS. This game is very solid with action, allowing you to have multiple modes of play from your standard Marathon to your 40 line with bright and vibrant colors. Also it is Tetris...on the Game Boy...what else do you want me to say?

9. Harvest Moon 2

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Alright I know some of you are groaning but here me out on this one. The first game was an absolute piece of shit by having the difficulty set way to easy, the third was a nightmare to play since it you were forced to pick between having crops or animals (the AI didn't work either). However this game has it just right, by allowing you to pick between and male or female farmer there are a ton of secrets to be had...one of which required you to have a friend to play the game! Yes...a single player farming RPG had the ability to trade crops and animals, the secrets were abound and the 3.5 year timer was set perfectly with days being the right length. If you don't have a GBA this is the definitive portable Harvest Moon to get.

8. Deja Vu 1 & 2

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Notice a pattern of good NES ports to this console? Yes there were a bunch of good ones, and I am only touching on a few. What make this one stand out is that the unreleased sequel IS IN THE GAME! Seriously if you have ever played a Kemco point a click NES game and enjoyed it, this is a must have to the collection. Also if you bad at those games, the interface is done in such a way that it tells you where to go and has a menu system that is quite intuitive without having a mouse. It is a great mystery that allows you to go in depth in a mob world and a great underrated gem.

7. Mario Golf

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Out of all the Mario games I had to choose from this one is one most people would be surprised about. Sure Super Mario Deluxe almost took its place however I can not deny a GREAT port of a game. Unlike its console counterpart, you are a golfer trying to improve your skills to eventually go and take on Mario on his home course, on the way you earn XP by completing challenges, using that Game Boy Transfer Pak on the n64 (yes a total of five games worked on that), and playing golf on an interface that should have been the standard for all portable golf games. Mario Tennis almost beat this one out, however I have to go with my choice of a game I got completely lost in.

6. Game and Watch Gallery 3

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
What is this? Game and Watch number 3? Why this version of the game? Well it comes down to one thing really, they have 10 games on it (5 are unlockable) and every single game is excellent. I am serious unlike it other ports where you have some good games and a few duds, this one exceeds expectations with some of the best games in the series. Including Mario Bros or what I like to call cake assembly plant where I have gone into 4 digits with my high score! Again anyone of the series is well worth it, but this version is what I think you get the most bang for your buck.

5. Pokemon Gold/Silver

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Yes folks, I was into the PokeCraze back in the 90s, and in my opinion this is the peak of the franchise. More Pokemon were added, a real time clock feature was used and determined certain outcomes of the game, breeding Pokemon, and allowing the pokemon TO CARRY ITEMS. Wow, that in itself is a novel concept, but more importantly allowed you to go back to the location of red/blue/yellow and see what really happened after you finished the game. Way ahead of its time, and what I considered the peak of the series as a whole, and yet there are only 4 more above it.

4. Shantae

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Ever did something when you were younger that you still regret? I was given this game as a present, beat the game several times and loved it, and then sold it to get a GBA. If you want to buy this game now it will cost over over $100. Yea I was an idiot, this was an amazing platformer that pushed the console to its limits, the writing was superb and Shantae herself was a kick ass character to get behind. Rumors have it that she might be getting a Wiqual soon, lets hope for that because any platformer fan needs to play this classic.

3. Crystalis

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
I will admit it, I skipped this game on the NES. However on the GBC this game kicked ass, exactly the same as the origional...except for the final level was added in to take it to another level. A very action oriented RPG that was overlooked by most but have it ported nearly identical to the NES on a portable device, you managed to hit a home run with this game. Either location it is a great game, on the go to me makes all that much better.

2. Wario Land 2

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
I normally do not say this often, but for this game it is well deserved. This game is THE GREATEST PLATFORMER EVER. I am not kidding, the mechanics, puzzles, fighting system, level progression, and overall challenge has not been surpassed by any 2D sidescrooling platformer. If you were really good you can go from the second level to the final stage, hidden shortcuts were abound and if you were smart enough to find everything you deserve a badge of honor. If you bow down to the platform genre this is a gem that should be required to play.

1. Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons

Screenshot1 Boxart Screenshot2
Yes folks this is my number one, not either Ages or Season, but both games. They were meant to be played back to back for the simple reason of telling a two tiered story. A story that forced you to go back and forth between the games to unlock secrets in either one, if you were able to do so you had an amazing experience that could not be beat. The level design, the power ups, the NPC dialog is something to behold. Also Capcom made these games, that's right a third party outdid Nintendo in a portable Zelda game. Out of all the entires of this list, this was the easiest one to choose since there was no way this game could be topped.

There you have it my top 15 games for the platform. If you have the fancy of getting this portable device I have good news for you. It is cheap! I re-bought a Game Boy Color for $7 at my local Play N Trade, and the #1 game literally cost me $9 each. Most of these games were common (except for Shantae) and are easily found in most retro stores. Do yourself a favor and pick up this console as soon as you can there are a ton of great games on here that need your attention. Until next time I have to go to the store and stock up on some more AA batteries.

Gameboy color always seemed to me as a savagely forgotten part of the Gameboy/DS history line. Sure there was some good things for the Gameboy and the GBAdvance, but what about the GBColor? I really only could think of Pokemon and the Zelda games.

I only learned of a few other games going through archives of 'files' on a website. It just seemed like the GBcolor got rushed out once the GBadvance came in.

I will now look into a handful of these titles and keep them close with my hard drive.

    Thanks good sir :)

Those Zelda games were awesome. I think I'll replay them this weekend. Also, I didn't know that Bionic Commando: Elite Forces even existed until now. I'll have to try to hunt for it. I love the original to death.

  • pstrife  - No Metal Gar Solid?
    avatar

How is this even absent? Sure hardly anyone played it, but it was a technological masterpiece for a Metal Gear Solid game.

Unlike Bionic Commando: Elite Forces, which was/is plagued by the annoying software/hardware saving issues which Nintendo never even tried to fix.

That was #16, just missed the cut sorry

i agree, metal gear solid was a great game! i forgot about a lot of these games. thanks for bringing back the memories.

  • Lotus Prince

I am amused that Shantae looks almost exactly like Ruby from Dark Cloud.

Also, I had no idea that Spy vs. Spy was a game. I remember enjoying the comics. Putting that into a game sounds like a pretty decent concept.

  • Goldindragon
    avatar

I really have to hunt some of these things down. I've obviously had a deprived childhood.

On a similar note, have you ever heard of Magi-Nation? It's definitely my top GBC game, which isn't really fair since I had like 3 games in total. But if you don't know it, I totally recommend it.

Oh man, I had a Game Boy Color. I played Link's Awakening DX for days at a time. I loved exploring the new dungeon they added for the color version of the game. Super Mario Bros. DX was pretty great too, with the minigames and hidden stuff to find. Really upped the replay value.

  • ThatGuyWithTheLightsaber  - Metal Gear Solid on GBC!
    avatar

The author clearly didn't play Metal Gear Solid on the GBC. It was an alternate MGS universe story, and the gameplay was awesome. Easily the best game on the GBC.

i played link's awakening before it was made into the "DX" version and i'm not sure i would consider it to truely be a gameboy color game. it was cool that they made use of the different colored tunics... but i don't remember much else being different. in my mind it's still an original gameboy game. i loved playing that game. probably my favorite in the series next to link to the past.

Others have mentioned it but Metal Gear Solid REALLY belongs on this list.

  • AJ75  - Warlocked
    avatar

This game never seems to find its way onto these lists, and there's no reason for it!
The developers practically made Warcraft: Orcs & Humans work on Gameboy. The gameplay is seamless, the control is perfect, the wizards are varied and the multiplayer is some of the best on the system.
A major shame the sequel got canned.

  • Coldguy

I've played Warlocked...I thought it was good, I think that was number 18

  • Hypothetical Murder Plot

Ah, Shantae. I bought that game back when it first came out, and I still play it (and enjoy it!) to this day.

Trust ColdGuy when he says it's great. It's several hours of gameplay you won't regret spending.

Pokémon Yellow is not a Gameboy Color game.

The Warioland serie is unfortunately quite underated.

Kudos to Lufia. I'm a huge fan, although this version I never picked up. You really are making me miss my old GBColor, it was the last handheld I actually owned. Great Article, and those Zelda handheld titles are deservedly at number one (the handheld Zeldas never get enough credit, I think).

I tried Deja Vu on the GBColor, but for some reason I couldn't enjoy it like I did on the NES. I think it was the screen or something.

  • CGC002

I remember when I was in kindergarten and I was the first kid to have the (at the time obviously) new Gameboy. It was so awesome. My mom had gotten me the original when I was 4 or so, and when I got one from my aunt on my birthday, I was hooked to games like Super Mario Deluxe, or Pokemon Crystal. Not to mention it could play all 11 of my original gameboy games. I eventually sold my original gameboy, as well as my GBA and sadly, my GBC as well.

Best portable gaming console ever. The only problem was the lack of a backlight, which was solved with a cheap attachment.

  • miquonranger03  - Awesome list

I loved my Game Boy Color, and those were some of the best games on any portable system. A lot of things I've never heard of here, so thanks a lot for giving me more things to check out!

I always thought that the Wario platformers on both Gameboy and Gameboy Colour were better than the pretty much any Mario game (apart from the Yoshi's island series if they count.)

Great list. I'm glad somebody else remembers the humble GBC..

  • omegawyrm
    avatar

A good list, though I thought Wario Land 3 was better than it's predecessor and had a ridiculous amount of content for a GBC game.

Also, the Dragon Warrior Monsters series is better than any of the Pokemon games by miles.

And no one played it, but Metal Gear: Ghost Babel is easily one of the best GBC games ever.

You might not have played any of those though, and it is a good list, so I'll still give you a thumbs up on this one.

This list got me to learn of the hella frustrating experience that is Shantae. Honestly, I started really hating the game for most of it, but I've kept playing it, and finally am at the last levels, and I gotta say, there's just a kind of charm that's made the game grow on me. Still one of the more frustrating games I've experienced in a while, but in the end, I guess I can say its been worth it. I mean, at the very least, I got to see some interesting monster designs, and Shantae herself is a fun character.

  • bobersonbob30

This article really annoyed me, not because i disagree with the list or the content, but the fatc that it made me think about GBC games again and i couldn't think of anything to challenge this list except from maybe the pokemon TCG. ALos is it just me or did some GBC games notwork properly: case in point x-men. There was asurvival mode that you had to defeat three times in a row , each time on an increasing level of difficulty to unlock charaters such as pheonix adn that big blue guy, but it didn't fucking work. I was so pissed t that game...
