Game Battle: Twilight Princesses
Gamecube

VS.

Wii

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the special edition of a Game Battle. I have recently been involved with several arguments with people about these two games. People want to know which of these games is simply the best version to play. In all honestly I could see why you would want to know this due to the fact that you can play either game in the same console, it just depends on which one should you invest in. So without further delay, lets get it on with the age old question: Which port is better?

Round 1: Graphics

Now I know what some of you are thinking, these are the exact same thing right? Well on the surface yes, however as you might expect the Wii's processing power makes it slightly sharper. The biggest difference is that the Will supports wide screen displays while the Gamecube does not. Now if you had the capability to play the game in wide screen, Wii is the way to go. However if you are on a standard screen the sharpness details are very minimal to the point where either game appears the same on a standard definition TV. So the slight edge goes to the Wii.

Round 2: Gameplay

Now when I played this for the first time I played it on the Wii and beat the game. Now when playing it on the Gamecube the biggest difference that I have noticed is that Hyrule Field is mirrored. Which at first confused me since I knew which ways to go to get from point A to point B, however due to the mirroring I had to switch the way I go in the game. Also Link is left handed in the Gamecube version when on the Wii he is right handed. This leads to you attacking your enemies at a different angle, which is no big deal if you are playing one over the other. As you might have guessed this is a push.

Round 3: Controls

At the end of the day, it is going to boil down to waggle or no waggle. Now as I mentioned before I have beaten the game on the Wii so I am more familiar with those controls, however playing it on the Gamecube I noticed several differences. First fishing on the Wii is very intuitive where as on the Gamecube it is a tad bit of a learning curve to get used to. Sword play is much better on the Gamecube since it detects exactly when I want to go and what combination of moves I want to use.

Now when it comes to both the slingshot and the bow and arrow this is where things go for a turn. The slingshot in the Wii had a medium range of attack and the seed would go and fall away after a certain amount of time. Now the Gamecube had the sling act more realistically by having it arc appropriately after the aforementioned medium distance. This allows you to use it as a medium distant attack and hit enemies behind certain cover pieces. The Bow and Arrow is actually more gun like in the Wii version since the targeting action is similar to a point and shoot with its target. Gamecube version treats it more realistically with a down the bow angle, I personally prefer this since I can use it for more distance attacks without forcing the hawk-eye to stead my arm when I aim.

Again many people will claim that it is only motion controls that will settle this arguments, however the biggest oversight is that on the Wii version you can actively use two items at a time, where on the Wii you can use three. On the surface this is not a big deal however when you are in battle and have to juggle between using one minor item by removing a major item, it can cause you to think more when selecting a plan of attack. At the end of the day however Gamecube wins out due to tighter sword play and better camera controls which you use more of.

Round 4: Collectibility

Now for the wildcard we go down to the numbers, which game is going to be worth more. From the get go you would think the Wii be priced higher since it would be more in demand, however if we are going to project into the future this is actually going to be reversed. Since the Wii is on the latest generation of consoles its production run is going to be greater then its last generation counterpart. Due to the amount of copies in circulation is at a higher amount the demand for this is simply going to be less then the Gamecube version. If economics taught me anything, the less supply the greater the demand, therefore the Gamecube version is the one that collectors need to look for now.

Well we have a winner! Gamecube beats its younger brother in the best port of the game. For those wanting to know if the game is good I can review the entire game in one sentence:

The Legend of Zelda Ocerina of Time 2: Wind Waker Never Existed
That's right if you are a big fan of Ocerina of Time, this is almost the exact same game, the story and imagery in the game blatantly tells you that this is a sequel to that game most Zelda fans know and love to the point that if you played the original it might leave a bad taste in your mouth that these game acted much in the same way as the N64 counterpart, so I say its a try for non-Zelda fans, however more of the same isn't going to push them to buy it. Special thanks to Linkard987 for suggesting this match-up.

That's all for now, see you next time on the next Game Battle!

I prefer the gamecube version as well, not just for it being easier to play, but I can't accept a right handed Link.

    It's a fandom thing.

  • Kimarous

    Ocarina. It's spelled Ocarina.

Yes, I'm being a grammar nazi.

I don't really understand what you were trying to say (non native speaker). Maybe a few periods would be helpfull.

    Hows this? ^
  • Kooksoaper13  - mmm I dunno

I personally liked the wii better and I think the controls deserve a little bit more than what they got on wii, and I also dont believe that whole supply demand collector nonsense *sigh* ohh well I know when Ive been beat good review and I loved both games

  • The_Masked_Donut  - Oh Reginald... I DISAGREE!!

Right, hello, sorry. Okay, firstly, the controls of the Wii version really are better for a few reasons... The waggle sword controls neither add nor deter the combat experience, and it's not like you have to insert your commands with such timed precision against these enemies. Punch-Out bosses, these are not.
Secondly, that tipping point argument about item collecting on the Wii being not as good as the one on the Wii made no sense, and furthermore, I never had any issue with item control on the Wii. More importantly in terms of control, you seem to view having a bow shoot like a gun as a bad thing. Being able to shoot dragon birds from a great distance with the Wii's precision is far more advantageous in terms of game design then in realism. I hated the bow and slingshot in Ocarina of Time. No reticule, and it moved like molasses.
As far as collectabillity goes, given that in the future, all retro games will be available via some sort of download, you shouldn't encourage the freaks who would pay an excess of money solely for having an original box and disk.
Most importantly, and the main reason I'm commenting is the quip about Wind Waker. I'm not even saying this as a fanboy [which I regrettably am] but as someone who enjoys playing good games. Wind Waker was a fantastic Zelda game and deserves far more respect then it's typically given. It was my first Zelda game, and it is one of the best. It's presentation was much improved then Ocarina which in retrospect had a very average storyline that was presented as such. Wind Waker had a story more distant and presented in a far more fascinating way. They pulled off that cell-shaded art beautifully, and despite new and improved graphics, it's still one of the most stylish games in existence. It's only flaw was a lack in the amount of Temples, the highlight in any Zelda game, and a bit of a general easiness to it. I still think I prefer Twilight Princess just because it took every aspect of a Zelda game [except the music, it could have been better] and refined it too a mirror shine.
On a final note, Buy Left 4 Dead 2, it will kick ass and it's worth the money.

  • blacktrojan3921

Dude I love Wind Waker; how can it be that bad? =/

  • Jabbawocky

I think you did yourself no favours by tipping the score the Gamecube's way because of collectablity, this does not affect one game being better than the other.

As for the controls you are comparing for realism in a fantasy set game. You made some good points but have seemed to throw the score GC's way on petty issues.

  • ericpowerup

I'm all for the Wii version. Why you ask? Cause I am left handed and us lefties must stick together!

    :D

  • Capsloco

Well, then you should stickt to the Gamecube version, since Link is a lefty and hence the Wii version is mirrored, the Link in it is right handed.^^

  • Mariofan3425  - i dis agree and a little zelda history/time line

I played both versions and the con trolles on the wii should have been 5/5 because you don't have to use the wii mote as the sword you can just use the buttons. And useing the bow and arrow/sling shot was a bit harder in the game cube version compared to the Wii version because in the wii you can move them a bit quicker and you don't have to worry about the anoying joy stick getting jammed which actualy does happen (same with the boomerang). Fishing was easer on the wii because you didn't really have to press any button to pull the rod up and get the fish like when getting the fish for that damned cat! oh and that thing on collect ability was just screaming i don't have the wii version and will support the game cube version (not trying to be mean)because i played it more. and how dare you diss ocarina of time and wind waker they were awsome!

and if you want to know why it was a continuation of that hyrule (ocarina's hyrule)being in wind waker
was because a lot of people didn't like the origanal secound game majoras mask (which wasn't that bad of a game people!) so nintindo made wind waker to fix there "mistake" and ended the story of ocarina of time. the reasone i know this is why the hell else would the give the legend of zelda ocarina of ime master quest when you pre orderd wind waker other than to gain a hype for the game! (sorry if i was a bit of a fan boy there! :P )

  • Cocolli

Yeah I disagree as well, I started this game on gamecube as my first Zelda game ever,... And got bored. I picked it up again on Wii to give it another go and beat it in a week, and since then I have picked up many of the older Zelda titles on virtual console and have loved them (A Link to the Past being my favorite). I really have to disagree mostly on the controls however, I mean the wii has the option to turn the motion control off if it bugs you, so that shouldn't even be a factor here. I turned my motion controls off for maybe 3 seconds before switching to my bow, then I rushed to put it back on. I loved the waggle, I mean it was awesome, and the spin attack was very convenient, and the sword was sensitive enough that I wouldn't get tired. The fishing did have a bit of a learning curve I'll agree there, but I just looked a video up on youtube and it became something very very easy to do.

Well I know you're trying hard to make this all 'official' and stuff, but at the end of the day It's all just opinion man.

The Legend of Zelda Ocerina of Time 2: Wind Waker Never Existed

Hu? Wasn't Ocarina 2 supposed to be Majora's mask or something (Or I might have been misimformed).

Anyway : I have both version and I enjoy the gamecube one better too, if only because I can actualy drive...erm... control the horse better.

  • Todd Hakusho

Majora was just a spin-off....like how Sonic and Knuckles was to Sonic 3.

  • Mariofan3425

majoras mask was ocarina 2 just people didn't like it so nintindo kind of made another zelda OoT2to fix there so called failure (it wasn't a bad game!)wind waker is however actually OoT 4 because twilight princess happens after OoT and befor wind waker due to the number of tempals and the seven sages untill ganandorf killed one and made it six sages and ganadorf being sealed at the end of Oot1.. well... he escaped after most people in hyrule forgot about the past events and hid his triforce from the sages who forgot that ganon had a triforce untill one of them gets killed.(explainig that the sages are mortal and that is why there only are two in wind waker...sort of.) and when defeated he went back to his realm somehow through Zant when link and zelda are too busy saying good bye to midna to even check if he is dead for good and then attacked hyrule again when people read thier history books and remebered link was a hero in there stories which were true and not stories in wind waker.

  • mochaloca85

There's two separate timelines formed after Ocarina of Time. Majora's Mask takes place in the child timeline after Link is returned to childhood by Zelda. He goes to the castle to warn Zelda about Ganondorf and then goes on his MM adventure. In this timeline, Majora's Mask is followed by Twilight Princess. The Hero's Shade in TP is generally thought to be OoT/MM child Link as he carries equipment from MM and resembles a Stalfos (which is what happens to Hylians that die in the Lost Woods). The Wind Waker takes place in the other ("adult";) timeline.

  • Capsloco

.......it's the same damn Game??? Ö.ö
I don't get the fuss about all this comparing. all in all it is´a good game and that is all that matters. It's not as good as the past games (what is a standart with Nintendos games nowadays)but heck.

  • Coldguy

:0 Wow many of you are upset. My one sentence review is normally me being sarcastic. I say it was Oceania of time 2 due to the fact that THE ENTIRE GAME WAS MADE TO BE LIKE IT! I mean the not so subtle references to the game drove me up a wall and I LIKED WIND WAKER, it was Nintendo's attempt to saying "my bad" to the Celda haters.

sorry for the misunder standing but when you said wind waker never existed it sounds like you didn't like the game and say it didn't happen like the zelda and mario CD-i games. *shuders and pukes due to the memories*

  • phastman99

The only real problem I have with the Wii version is that Link is right handed otherwise I think there about the same, I like the wii versions controls a little better though. there about tied for me they both deserve 16.5/17 (coming from a huge Zelda fan)

  • karoso  - sling shot and bow

even though the gamecube version is good for collectors, the Wii is the choice if you want to actually play it! you dont have to use the wii-motes pointer to shoot!

you can change it so the controller acts just like the gamcube version. go with the wii if all you want is to play it.

  • The_Masked_Donut  - I suppose I got carried away, but what else are fo

I'm glad to see that you do in fact apparently like Wind Waker. It's not even that I'm that passionate a fanboy, I just get offended when that game is dismissed as it normally is by Zelda fans. As far as Twilight being similar to Ocarina, I get that too. It's whole design was meant to top Ocarina in every way, which for the most part I find they did successfully. I get the idea of it not being different enough from previous titles as a negative, but the way I see it, it's not like Nintendo cranks out Zelda games every year. In fact, these types of games come very few and far between in the medium itself. I'm thusly willing to accept some similarities between games.

  • Moon Jump

I enjoyed Wind Waker, the problem for me was you didn't take that much damage and I didn't die in the game once. I never even collected all of the hart containers.

Other then that, the controls were spot on and other then the game being on the easy side, I enjoyed it.

  • smbrian62386  - Just an opinion.

One thing I don't agree with is your "That's right if you are a big fan of Ocerina of Time, this is almost the exact same game" statement. It's not. Pretty sure I don't remember time travel and and young link in Twilight. Not to mention Twilight's wolf gameplay. Or the bug collection. Or the ghost collection.

But other than that, I pretty much agree with you on everything else. Also, might want to check those run on sentences.

  • Brilliant Brill

I beat it on both systems. I played the Gamecube version first and imo it is the better one for reasons already said.

The marble maze mini game is A LOT harder on the wii, btw.

  • AnthoFlex

I suggest this guy go back and replay the games from the beginning all the way to the end, pick up EVERYTHING, and then make another review.

Coming from an over-obsessive Zelda fan, this review is all over the place.

Both versions have their ups and downs (not much though) but the only thing that bothers me is the left handed, right handed thing with Link in the versions. I know, I know, but i'm left handed, so i gotta represent my left handed hero

  • laser483

i agree, the gamecube version is much better. I played the gamecube one first, and found it to be pretty standard gameplay, with the only disappointment being that you could only use 2 items at a time. Seriously, Midna has no useful advice and that slot could be used for a 3rd item. All she does is remind you of your objective and rarely ever helps you figure out puzzles.

Anyways, i moved onto the wii version and it took some time to get used to the world, and the swinging controls. It just felt sort of awkward to me. Overall, it feels like you have more control with a slashing button than with swinging the remote.

When the next Zelda game comes out and Nintendo wishes to stick with this swing the remote to attack thing, i hope they make it seem more natural (at least thats how i felt).

  • Vivo

I noticed the immense amount of Ocarina of Time imagery as well; though to all you fans I don't think Coldguy's statement was putting down windwaker, but simply stating how little windwaker and twilight princess are related.

I only had two big problems with twilight princess.

    1. The length in comparison with the difficulty. This game is EXTREMELY long; maybe longer then any other Zelda game I have played - though I admit this could just be how I felt during the game. Why? Because it was so incredibly easy; I don't recall a time I had any difficulty getting past a certain point in the game (unless it was for something that was obvious and yet not so obvious)

2.Little replayability - which is probably true for two reasons. 1: Windwaker spoiled me; after they added in the "new account" thing I was almost expecting a similar system to Twilight Princess. 2: The reason above, the game is way too long and way too easy. I had planned to possibly do a 3-heart only run or something to make it harder; but then realized with dismay that I would still like to open any and all treasure chests I find (Heart Pieces anyone?).

With all that being said however I still enjoyed Twilight Princess and loved the numerous inferences it made to Ocarina of Time (even if continuity seemed to be all over the place.)

  • VyncentCarver

The Zelda games are on an unknown time with eachother. Wind Waker is seemingly right after Ocarina, and Twilight Princess. It's a bit strage, they aren't consecutive by any means.

  • Lotus Prince

You have no idea how utterly furious I was when Twilight Princess was delayed. Then delayed again. Then delayed again, to be released one or two months after the Wii release. This was when I preordered the GCN version a year in advance. I was absolutely livid. No way was I going to be caught playing Twilight Princess with that ridiculous and utterly stupid Wiimote. I'd be glad to sacrifice a barely noticeable difference in graphics to be able to use a controller, and not flail like an idiot whenever I swing my sword, which is quite often in a Zelda game.

Also, Windwaker was a very solid game, except for having to be on the boat 80% of the time, and the end of the game being a fetchquest. My only complaint is the graphics. And BOY, was I pissed about the graphics, after seeing that E3 teaser picture, where everything was realistically done. But in the actual game, Link looks inane, and his eyes are literally most of his head.

Also also, it's spelled "Ocarina." How you misspelled that one, I have no idea, seeing how that word's been in every forum ever for the past DECADE.

  • MisterC

This was the only Zelda game I ever sold. I still have and enjoy Link to the Past, Ocarina, Wind Waker, Minsh Cap, Phantom Hourglass... but I can't stand the sight of Twilight Princess. Bad enough that it's an uninspired repeat of Ocarina of Time, but it's actually the little things that really ruin this. For example the puzzles are so ridiculous that there's no obvious way to figure them out without looking for online help, unlike the other titles in the series. For an example, one of them has you needing to climb on Gorons on one point to continue but since you can't climb on any other characters, you'd never be able to figure it out. Or how about the fact that no matter where you move, falling rocks will always follow you and damage you unless you manage to spin out of the way at the exact moment?! God I hate Twilight Princess! I hate it, I hate it, I hate it!!!!!!!!!!

  • The Brit

As someone who is in the middle of an Economics course, and on course for an A, I feel I have to say the less supply does not mean more demand, it means a higher price because the demand cannot be satified as well by the supply. For example due to rising Unemployment at the moment supply in all countries is going down, but that does not mean that Demand is rising, in fact the opposite is true.

  • cheesoid

the motions controls add an extra depth that the gamecube doesn't have

  • SideSmash  - ...

Why the fuck would you compare the SAME FUCKING GAME, just on different consoles? That's like comparing GTAIV on the 360 to the PS3!

That's just my opinion. It's a game, who gives a fuck whether it's on one console or another.

  • batmann

i think that you are somewhat right about this game with gc vs wii i have them both, but and i say this as a big fan of zelda ever sence "link to the past" came out who has played every zelda game (four swords dose not count!) majoras mask was the sequal to OOT, you even play as the SAME LINK. twilight prenses was just very reminesent to OOT and when it came to story it was like LINK TO THE PAST! NOT OOT. and you know what fuck you wind waker was a good game. other then that good review.

  • FoxDie_Alive

eh, I'll stick to Majora's Mask
